Local town councillor Emily Brothers has confirmed that she is seeking the Labour Party nomination for the new Parliamentary Constituency of Isle of Wight East. Emily hopes that she will be selected by the local Labour Party to stand in the next General Election, which looks likely to be held in the latter part of 2024. Councillor Brothers previously stood for Parliament in Sutton and Cheam at the 2015 General election and for the Greater London Assembly a year later. She is a Sandown Town Councillor, Governor with The Bay primary and secondary schools and is an NHS Governor with Moorfields Eye Hospital. A leading voice for equality nationally, most notably on disability and LGBT+ rights, Emily has played a key role in harmonising equality bodies and laws. She has previously led health and local government programmes for the Equality and Human Rights Commission. As applications for selection close today, Emily has said:
“It would be a privilege to represent Isle of Wight East at Westminster, advocating for a ‘Fair Deal’ for residents. Addressing the cost of living crisis, improving public services and tackling climate change will be key priorities for change. “Communities across East Wight have been failed by the Conservatives: incompetence, inequality, insecurity – so it is time for change. “Labour offers a progressive set of policies that focus on economic growth, ensuring local people have better financial security; developing our NHS so it is fit for purpose and breaking down barriers to opportunity, ensuring quality education and employment; enabling communities to flourish and make our streets safer. “Recent flooding and coastal erosion amplify the need to take active steps to address climate change, holding Southern Water and Environment Agency to account. Improving our infrastructure and public transport is essential for island sustainability. “The cost of living crisis is compounded by expensive ferry fares; shortage in affordable housing is exacerbated by planning blight, whilst public services are stretched. Like most East Wight residents, I am frustrated by these failures and want to make a difference, bringing hope of renewal to our towns and villages.”
Polling from Election Maps UK published last week indicates a Labour 2,289 majority and analysis from Electoral Calculus predicts Labour with a 1,144 majority and 58% chance of winning. Responding to these figures for Labour, Emily has said:
“I will work hard to gain the trust of local people because every vote counts, not psephology or collusion. Labour is the only progressive alternative to the Conservatives, so we will endeavour to win and secure much needed change.”
It is unknown who else will be standing for Labour in both the East and West constituencies.

Would be amazing to see these things happen for the sake of the island so she will get my vote if selected. Obviously, we know that the Tories will do nothing whatever they say.
She has done a great job for Sandown – NOT
She’s one town Councillor on the local town council, which doesn’t have a lot of powers. Not sure what you expect of parish councillors?
Actually a plus for her for putting herself forward forward to do that role, we need more people to stand for elections.
But is she MP material? I don’t know. But for once, the Labour Party might have a chance in one of the two new seats and should make sure they have a rigorous selection process and a good candidate. The Conservatives came up with a fairly poor shortlist for IOW East with a couple of them completely unsuitable. What ever our views it would be good to have decent range of candidates.
She seems to hop around the south east trying to get elected to one position or another, now its the islands turn to have the benefit of her experience, I am sure we can do much better than this but she ticks a lot of the labour criteria boxes.
I have not heard of Ms Brothers before but as a supporter of Labour for 50 years I have an open mind.. I will not enter into disability or LBGQABC+ issues that she wants to promote, as I am a retired disabled straight male more interested in paying my bills and putting food on our table. What I want to know is what are Labours policies and plans to get us out of a 16 year recession, Climate change is fine, but NOT at the expense of paying larger bills and not getting anything done as per Southern Water who, once again, want more money to improve their facilities for about the third time! So I guess we shall have to see what comes next.
Reading it objectively all I can see are woke, bleeding heart policies……
Sorry Madam…
You lost me as soon as you started spouting on about LGBTQ+++, equality and diversification!
Agree 100%.
I was hoping for something about housing, the ongoing adult care crisis, education. Oh well !
Given that both of the main parties support the current genocide being committed in gaza I shall not be voting for either I am ashamed to be English at the moment shame on you all…
Do you support what hamas did to the Israelis then? They started the fight, now they are reaping the consequences, even if Israel are being too harsh on civilians.
“Not psephology or collusion”, who was that a dig at, I wonder ?
