Emergency services have been called to Ventnor this morning (Saturday) to attend a road traffic collision involving a motorcycle.
The crash on Newport Road has led to the closure of the road from the Central store to just outside the fish and chip shop on the corner of Ocean View Road.
1 ambulance and 3 Police vehicles were mobilised to the scene shortly before 06:30 as a result of the incident near the junction with Steephill Down Road.
Southern Vectis Route 3 buses are currently unable to serve Godshill, Wroxall or Upper Ventnor, instead diverting via Whitwell and Gills Cliff Road when travelling between Rookley and Mitchell Avenue in Ventnor.
UPDATE @ 07:59 – The ambulance has now left the scene to convey the injured motorcyclist to St Mary’s Hospital.
The involved vehicle is still by the roadside with debris across the carriageway.
The road remains closed by the junction with Down Lane to where Newport Road meets both Ocean View Road and Gill’s Cliff Road.
UPDATE @ 10:15 – It has been confirmed that the casualty has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance after initially being transported to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance.
The full extent of the injuries sustained remains unclear, but Police are describing them as ‘serious’.
UPDATE @ 11:00 – The mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit has arrived at the scene to conduct a forensic examination of the crash site, indicating the severity of the injuries sustained.
Closures are still in place at all the affected roads and are likely to remain so for several hours.
UPDATE @ 11:54 – The Police have finished investigating the scene and the road has now reopened.
Locals say that the motorcyclist was travelling up Gills Cliff Road and went head-on into a stone wall.
All bus routes are back to normal.

Looks like one of the motorbikes that was tearing around Ryde yesterday afternoon in a group of 4.
Don’t make assumptions you don’t know nothing
so, given that’s a double negative, he knows something (here’s a hint, it’s what he initially commented you brainlet)
Looks like? So you don’t know? Shut up until you know what really happened
I know what really happened he fell off his bike
Total chaos with a hard closure in place. Please avoid, no way to turn round easily and impatient drivers making it a nasty experience.
That bike has an illegal exhaust and the L plates are not correct. I’ve seen this rider many times as I walk to work in the morning. Their behaviour is what caused this accident.
you dont half talk some rubbish..thats someones child fighting for their life, a restricted 125 going uphill isnt going to be fast, the road there is dreadful, exhaust is not illegal nor is his L plate, you dont even ride a bike or have any clue..leave it to the police, keyboard nuisance..
It’s call pushing their limitations and we hear these bikers tearing up and down Newport road day and night, in particular the ones with ridiculous exhaust systems. That corner is sharp, and we see riders leaning their bikes trying to go round as fast as possible,,,, this COULD be the result of just pushing themselves outside their ability levels. I wish the rider no ill will and hope he/she recovers well. I do thank god that one of the many pedestrians using that path were not involved.
You don’t know the facts was you there
Are you an accident investigator? Where you there? You know nothing so shut up. Someone has been seriously injured.
Yes by going to fast for that stretch of road
Guess he got the Isle of Man mixed up for the Isle of Wight judging by the other comments
Please be mindful this person is seriously injured, hope they are going to be ok? XX it doesn’t state male or female? Keep you opinions to yourself.
Do we know if any other vehicles were involved? I’m assuming not, but never assume. From my many years of driving, I tend to find that following a hot spell of weather, then a bit of rain, the roads seem to be a bit more slippery.
I see he has part of an L plate on that bike. Hope the guy is ok, but personally I’ve never thought it was a good idea to just do CBT and then jump on a bike unsupervised. Been about 15 years since I did a week long intensive bike riding course and passed at the end. All that experience I got with a fully qualified instructor to guide me was invaluable. Would be even more benefit on today’s much more dangerous roads. But then I guess it also comes down to the riders attitude and reason for wanting to ride.
Why are my comments always removed from this site?
Hope the rider will be ok.
Well this kind of accident on that corner was just waiting to happen, so many road users cut the corner there.
There’s No indication given to the reason the motorcycle crashed into a wall, I hope the person is ok.
Could be self inflicted, or a medical reason, if not, I hope a lesson learnt will change the person’s attitude….young or old experience is the key…
Hope he’s or she is ok and makes a good recovery
More bad driving on the IW
One fact is, Whether riding down around to Ocean View Rd, or up around towards Newport Rd, the bike needs to lean into the corner. Thus giving a trajectory of an out of control vehicle towards the outside of the bend. Had this rider been heading in either of these directions, the possibilities of bike & rider ending up on the inside of the corner, with the force of this impact are near impossible. Looking at how bent the forks appear to be in the pic, I’d hedge my bets that he came up Gill’s Cliff Rd at pace & didn’t see the junction. If that is the case I’m sure Police will be asking Why?
Yep, made no attempt to turn, went up hill at speed and straight into the wall. I watched the lad hit the wall as he flew off his bike.
Well I saw it all happen, I also have it on camera
the lad came up the hill, didn’t stop, he appeared to be slowing down but made no attempt
to turn at all.
He hit the wall head on at between 40/60mph.
my dad and another blood lifted the bike off him
and stayed with him until the ambulance came
