Four-time Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds is encouraging people on the Isle of Wight to support Sport Relief 2016, with a variety of events taking place across the Isle this month.
Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games events are taking place from Friday 18th March to Sunday 20th March, with people urged to walk, run, swim or cycle at over 1,000 locations across the UK, to raise money for Sport Relief.
Local Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games events are taking place at Seaclose Park in Newport on Sunday 20th March. Of all the money raised by the public through Sport Relief, 50% is used to make a difference in the UK, the other 50% goes towards transforming lives across the world’s poorest communities. Simmonds, who is backing Sainsbury’s support for the event said:
“Sport Relief is one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events and I encourage everyone in Isle of Wight to get involved by taking part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games or buying some of the fun Sport Relief products available in Sainsbury’s.
“Sport Relief does great work and it’s brilliant to see the enthusiasm for this year’s event. With Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games events happening right across the country, I encourage people to take part and do themselves proud.”
A number of “Getting fit for Sport Relief” fundraising events will take place at Sainsbury’s Newport & West Cowes stores over the next month, including:
Sunday 13th March Sainsbury’s Regional Operations Manager Darren Noonan will be taking part in a 56 mile cycle ride round trip to all Sainsbury’s stores on the island starting from our West Cowes, through to the Ryde Convenience store, then through to Sainsbury’s Sandown, Freshwater, Newport and back to West Cowes with colleagues from our Newport store.
From Friday 18th – Sunday 20th March at Sainsbury’s Newport, customers will have the opportunity to get fit on either a static bike or rowing machine in the foyer, and joining colleagues as they aim to cycle & row their way to reach the retailer’s Store Support Centre in Holborn, London and back, which is a total of 180 miles.
Friday 18th – Sunday 20th March. Redfunnel Ferries on the Isle of Wight is also helping support this cause again this year as colleagues will be fundraising for donations with Sport Relief Merchandise both in the East & West Cowes Terminals, with proceeds going towards projects both here in England and Africa.
In the Newport Store there will also be a competition for youngsters, where they can win themselves a goody bag full of Sport Relief merchandise and guinea pig t-shirt, by guessing how many dots are on the handmade Sport Relief 2016 cup.
Friday 18th – 20th March The Isle of Wight’s Local Charity of the Year, Ability Dogs 4 Young People, will be in store, helping to fundraise and giving demonstrations with their ability dogs. The charity benefitted from the Sport Relief grant back in 2014.
Friday 18th March Sainsbury’s West Cowes is holding a bake-off coffee morning at St. Mary’s church Hall, Northwood Park, Cowes from 10am-2pm. Either bring along a cake to enter into the competition or go along to the coffee morning to support.
Saturday 19th March Sainsbury’s West Cowes is holding a 5km fun run. The race starts at Sainsbury’s, High street Cowes at 10am down to Gurnard beach huts and then back to Sainsbury’s. It costs £5 to enter the run, you can get a sponsorship form from Sainsbury’s West Cowes.
Sunday 20th March Sainsbury’s West Cowes has organised a supermarket 6 aside football tournament which is being held at Queens Gate Foundation Primary School in East Cowes. The match will kick off is at 9.30 am and there is a £2 entry fee.
Wednesday March 23rd: Sainsbury’s West Cowes will be holding a charity quiz night at the Cowes Combined Services Club, High Street Cowes. The event will start at 6.30pm and the retailer is looking for teams of 4-5 people to join, there will be a £10 entry per team.
