Lushington Hill has finally reopened following this week’s burst water main, easing traffic congestion in and around Wootton – although works are continuing.
The main road between Newport and Wootton reopened late yesterday (Friday), having been closed for several days while Southern Water carried out emergency repairs.
Temporary traffic lights remain in place at Lushington Hill while work continues, meaning motorists may still experience some delays.
As previously reported by Island Echo, hundreds of properties were left without water on Wednesday morning after 2 separate water mains burst on either side of Wootton.
Engineers were called to both Eleanor’s Grove, near Fishbourne, and Lushington Hill, with the latter subsequently closed to traffic while extensive repair works were carried out.
The closure caused significant disruption locally, particularly on surrounding roads as motorists sought alternative routes between Newport, Wootton and Ryde.
Island Roads said on Friday that Southern Water was continuing to work hard to address the issues in Wootton and that it hoped Lushington Hill would reopen later that day – which it subsequently did.
However, the reopening does not mark the end of the works.
Island Roads has confirmed that Southern Water crews will need to return at a later date to complete further carriageway works beyond the immediate repair sites. Those works will be carried out at night in an effort to minimise further disruption to motorists.
