An elderly woman is being treated by paramedics after being knocked down by a car on the zebra crossing in Apse Heath this morning (Wednesday).
The incident, involving a Mercedes SLK, has occurred outside the Premier convenience store at the busy Apse Heath roundabout.
Island Echo understands the pedestrian was crossing the road, at the crossing, when the older male driver of the Mercedes failed to give way, resulting in a collision at just before 10:00.
Police have closed Newport Road in both directions between the roundabout and Branstone Cross as the incident is investigated.
Traffic is backed up in all directions, adding to the already lengthy delays in The Bay area today.
UPDATE @ 10:45 – The pedestrian – a woman in her 60s – is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries, although those injuries are not deemed life-threatening or life-changing.
Police have now reopened Newport Road in both directions.
Anyone with information is asked to call Police on 101, quoting 44240438474.

Very sad to hear this and best wishes to the lady concerned for a speedy recovery.
Are driver age descriptions going to be included in ALL your articles from now on? If not, why not?
This is what happens when some arse designs a zebra crossing right on top of a junction, where drivers are watching the junction instead of the zebra crossing. Suprised there have not been more incidents
Totally agree. Clearly no risk assessment was done, or it would be moved away from the junction and be a Pelican crossing. The junction is an accident waiting to happen of itself, without adding a zebra crossing into the equation.
CR, you have got it spot on. That junction is a death trap for cars and pedestrians on that crossing. I live locally and have reported the positioning of that crossing to a councilor. I was told it WAS discussed at a council meeting and the outcome was ” If it aint in the island roads budget, tough ”
It would only take Island Roads to move the crossing towards the Arreton side a few meters to give everybody coming from the Morrisons end, time to see people on the crossing. Bloody hell council, somebody was killed on that crossing a few years ago.
The standard of driving is atrocious on this island. Only the other day, I was driving west along Carisbrooke High Street. I was behind a double decker bus which had stopped opposite the Coop. I could see that the pedestrian crossing lights, ahead of the bus, were about to turn red, so I stayed behind the bus. Not the impatient idiot who was behind me! He overtook me, and the bus at speed and obviously then had to slam on his brakes for the red lights where children and parents were crossing. I see this careless driving EVERY day! I wish the ‘elderly’ pedestrian (though I wouldn’t say someone in their 60s is ‘elderly’ a full recovery.
Until the island authorities introduce strict
speeding rules on the island and install
Camera’s at pedestrian crossing and Traffic Lights
sadly such accidents will not stop.
Everyday on island Roads I see vehicles jump
Red lights.
The island needs to recruit more traffic Police on
the island.
I pray the pedestrian is well, personally I don’t
feel safe crossing this Road, not to mention many
other roads.
