An elderly male has been rescued from an awkward predicament by fire crews after becoming stuck on a ladder in Sandown this afternoon (Saturday).
3 fire appliances from Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde are on scene at Sandham Close off Perowne Way – alongside the Rescue Support Vehicle from Newport – after being alerted to the male’s plight at just before 13:50.
Island Echo is told that the casualty – thought to be in his 80s – was scaling a ladder to reach the roof of his property when he became stuck.
Firefighters have used rope rescue techniques and manpower to lower the casualty to the ground, where he is now being tended to by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, which has a St John Ambulance crew on scene.
The incident is now being scaled down with resources being returned to station.
The male is expected to be taken to hospital for further assessment.

Oh bless him hope he’s ok? Someone else should be climbing the ladder not him?
I have a number for a very nice, efficient ‘handy man’!!!

talk about overkill
They are being paid anyway,so look at it as training.
No extra cost to the council tax payer if that’s what your worried about.
Hopefully there’s no more than one turning out if you’re ever in trouble haha
Spot on. How much has this foolishness cost?
Well nothing else to do on a quiet day but make pumps three.
No word as yet on where the air ambulance landed.
Talk about a waste of public resources! He climbed up the ladder beggars belief how he couldn’t climb back down! Bet his wife had some stern words…Steve
How does it ‘beggar belief’ that an old man got up a ladder and then lost his nerve or got himself into a position when he couldn’t make it down? Have you not the depth of understanding and basic compassion to realise what it can be like when you get old? You do things wrongly and make mistakes. Wish I could be around to see you when you get old and get to understand what it’s like.
Good grief will you stop your hand whinging! I’ll have you know I’m 64 myself and fit as a fiddle, don’t need your negativity on my comments..Steve
Going up is always easier than coming down, especially if your not fit or overly confident !but at that age should pay someone else to do it and not take the risk.
The Fire Service are taking lessons from Island Roads
1 guy doing the work, while the others are watching.
Another complete waste of Tax payers money.
Unbelievable. In his 80’s!!! Should’ve left him there… Another rather dim, arrogant old man. Much like the old driver’s that don’t know when to give up and the (mainly) men that can’t walk properly but refuse to use a stick or walker… Yawn…
Wait till you are 80 and have no one to help you and can’t afford to pay for everything. You utter xxxx
What an attitude!
Silly old fool wasted every time
