The Eastern Yar river has been put on a flood alert tonight (Sunday) as water levels are high and are continuing to rise – with properties at Alverstone warned to have flood protection installed.
Staggeringly, half a month’s rainfall – some 50mm – has been recorded in Knighton in the last 48 hours alone.
Overnight, minor impact flooding to low lying roads, cycle tracks and footpaths along the river valley is expected. This includes Golf Links Road and by tomorrow morning possible impacts at Moreton Common, Sandown.
In Alverstone, the river is unlikely to peak until the early hours of the morning and homeowners are being advised to have flood protection installed and ready. At Sandown, levels will rise until lunchtime.
Tomorrow (Monday) should be dry, but heavy rain is forecast again on Tuesday. Local residents should expect the river to be much higher than normal until Wednesday (19th December).
The Environment Agency say they have checked that Bembridge sluice is operating normally. Although the marsh will be wetter than normal, it will not affect property at Brading.
