A large cliff fall has seen tonnes of rock crash onto the beach at Yaverland this morning (Saturday).
It was at around 06:30 that members of the public first reported the collapse as they witnessed rubble cascade down the side of the cliff and onto the beach below.
The incident has occurred at the far end of Yaverland beach.
Luckily the incident occurred when the beach was quiet. Yaverland, like many of the Island’s beaches, is expected to be extremely busy this weekend as the Island continues to bask in the Summer sunshine.
It is understood that signs have recently been erected warning beachgoers to stay away from the foot of the cliff.
The most recent large-scale cliff fall at Yaverland was back in October 2023 when the well known Victorian battery wall – that had been protruding from the cliff for years – fell away, as previously reported by Island Echo.
UPDATE @ 12:30 – In response to the slip, the Isle of Wight Council has issued the following statement:
“A number of landfalls have occurred at Yaverland in recent years.
“The advice to residents and visitors is to exercise caution with walking around the Islands coastline.
“Especially to stay clear of the foot of cliffs, as these can be unstable at this time of year.
“Yellow warning signs are in place advising the public.”

Shame the derelict hotels didn’t fall down,
Sandown would look much cleaner.
