A young male will soon appear in court after being apprehended by Police on an illegal e-Bike in Ryde yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).
The rider is alleged to have been seen travelling around the Haylands area at speeds of around 30mph – without pedalling.
It didn’t take long for officers to locate the individual on Upton Road, where the bike was instantly seized.
The unnamed male has been reported for multiple driving offences and is now awaiting his day in court.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is reminding Islanders about the rules when it comes to e-Bikes…
- A legal E-Bike must show either the battery’s voltage or the maximum speed of the bike
- Its electric motor: must have a maximum power output of 250 watts and should not be able to propel the bike when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph.
- Any electric bike that does not meet the rules is classed as a motorcycle or moped and needs to be registered and taxed
- You’ll need a driving licence and insurance to ride one and you must wear a crash helmet.
A spokesperson for the force has said:
“If you’re an illegal e-Biker and continue to ride your e-Bike expect to be stopped and dealt with as any other road user and your bike will likely be seized and crushed”.

Shame they can’t catch the little drug running sh*ts being a menace in Binstead!!
Totally agree, wouldn’t be hard to catch them , they ride a regular route, seems to be loads of them on electric off road bikes with no helmets just balaclavas.
I think some of them are the same ones seen in Binstead, Haylands and along Ryde seafront.
The parents of this young man must have known what he was doing, why can they not be held responsible and be answerable for their part in allowing this?
Pity they cannot catch the two cretins who ride this type of bike with no lights along the Esplanade and pavements when it gets dark.
