The driver of a VW Beetle has fled the scene of a crash in Sandown, which has seen 4 parked cars damaged – including 1 that has been spun 90 degrees into a wall.
The collision, which occurred at around 06:00 this morning (Saturday), has resulted in Albert Road being closed by Police at the junction of Station Avenue.
A VW Beetle has ploughed into the rear quarter of a Mini, rotating it 90 degrees onto the pavement and into a wall. As a result, the 3 cars parked in front – including a classic Subaru Impreza – have been shunted, all suffering rear and front end damage.
Island Echo understands the driver of the VW – which is taxed, MOTed and insured – fled the scene prior to the arrival of Police.
Recovery of the Beetle is underway, with the Mini set to be recovered later this morning.
It’s the second crash of the morning with Police also called to Racecourse near Newport, as first reported by Island Echo.
UPDATE @ 11:21 – Police have confined that they were called to the scene at Albert Street at 05:08 this morning.
2 people – thought to be a man and a woman – ran from the scene.
Officers are now investigating the circumstances that led to the crash. No arrests have been made at this stage.
Anyone with information about the incident, who hasn’t already spoken to officers, is asked to call PC Thomas Marsden at Newport police station on 101.

Another drink drive please remove my comment (as usual) if not aloud to say that
If they had nothing to hide, they wouldn’t have run away, would they? So, if not drunk, then drugged up ??
Easy to prove if the owner was driving it at the time…finger print the steering wheel, gear stick, door handles etc. If only his prints are on it…guilty as charged
Or HER!
If stolen gloves could have been worn
DNA on the air bag which probably went off.
Another idiot will be along soon…
24 hours to cleanse their blood.
What’s the reg of the beetle
If/when caught I hope prison sentence followed by 10 year ban from driving, then take a complete retest at drivers expense.
The punishment for leaving the scene of an accident is less than a drink driving ban.
Taxed, MOT and insured so clearly easy to know who owns it. Perhaps more a query of who was driving/had it been stolen?
