12 team members from KFC stores in Lake and Newport took to the streets around the Isle of Wight to litter pick on Tuesday, to mark the launch of the Great British Spring Clean and KFC’s newest commitments to tackle local littering.
KFC team members were joined by Councillors Paul Brading, Adrian Whittaker and John Marshall to tidy up areas around Merrie Gardens.
As a headline partner for Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean, KFC has announced a series of new litter commitments including the creation of a £40,000 fund to support and equip local litter picking groups in their efforts to tidy up local areas, which will be distributed by Keep Britain Tidy.
It also includes a commitment to partner with three local councils across the UK to trial new ways to tackle littering, such as testing localised anti-littering marketing messages and the creation of new concept rubbish bins.
KFC is increasing calls on its fans to #DontBeATosser and help keep local areas tidy throughout the Isle of Wight with a new marketing campaign that aims to raise awareness of the litter problem and encourage everyone to be more mindful about how they dispose of their litter. This will include the erection of 15ft banners at restaurants across the UK, brandishing the slogan #Don’tBeATosser.
Commenting on the litter pick, KFC senior public affairs manager Tom Newham said:
“As the weather warms up and we all enjoy more time outside, the eyesore of litter in our local communities is more noticeable than ever. So what better time to launch our latest litter commitments than during the Great British Spring Clean. We’re pleased to have been joined by Councillors Paul Brading, Adrian Whittaker and John Marshal to help us tidy up the Isle of Wight.
“But tidying up our local area isn’t just a one-off event. We take our responsibility to tackling litter seriously and want to be part of the longer-term solution. That’s why we’re looking forward to funding local litter picking groups up with our new fund and working closely with the Isle of Wight Council and the wider community to explore ways to keep the Isle of Wight tidy.”
Councillor Paul Brading, who attended the litter pick, has said:
“Myself along with Cllr Whittaker, Cllr Marshall and his wife Kaye, were delighted to help support the wonderful KFC initiative to litter pick areas around their Lake Restaurant.
“Since KFC opened in Lake they have made every effort to keep any litter to an absolute minimum, allaying initial concerns of local residents, and this initiative really supports their efforts to achieve this. Personally, I was amazed just how much litter we collected in 2 hours, and items ranging from lots of drinks cans, discarded face coverings, to even a pair of training shoes!
“Thank you to all the Managers and staff of KFC that took part in a real community effort.”
Isn’t the what part of our council tax goes too? Just shows the value of our money we work hard for
Are you saying it’s ok to just dump rubbish anywhere?
Given the amount of rubbish strewn about by complete tossers a sizeable proportion of which is from the fast food industry, I welcome this late, but responsible initiative. Now we need to educate the muppets what bins are for!
Wishing us all luck with that one.
And Newport???, Area opposite KFC, road leading to Matalan, corner of Matalan car park by the bridge. Idiots just throwing remnants and rubbish out if car windows.
Walked that route again yesterday, and no KFC rubbish, well done peeps, let’s hope they keep it going.
Our Clouncil have excess tossers there.
There are a load of tossers out there for sure.
Well done to you all. Lake, your customer service is second none.
Yep, shame about the size of there shrinking chicken portions.
Gone down hill since it opened.
