Diggers have moved in as work to create a new builders merchant at St George’s in Newport gets underway
It was earlier this week that news broke that builders merchant Jewson had finalised the contract to purchase a parcel of land at St George’s in Newport.
Following the announcement, no time was wasted with diggers immediately moving in this week to get started on accommodation works for the new premises.
It is hoped that these works will be completed in the New Year, when it is expected that an announcement regarding the proposed retail park – which will sit adjacent to the new Jewson store – will also be given.
Back when the announcement was made, a Jewson spokesperson said:
“We’re committed to the communities living and working on the island and I believe this further major investment is testimony to supporting in every way we can.”
The retail park project – which will play host to a mix of retail outlets – goes hand-in-hand with the plans to build Newport IW a new home in Whippingham. Diggers were first seen on-site at The Racecourse back in October, with works well underway at this stage.
A finish date for either of those projects is yet to be announced, but it is hoped works can be completed by September 2025 – Island Echo understands.
Upon the beginning of construction works on the St George’s site, a South Coast Leisure spokesperson said:
“South Coast Leisure has started accommodation works for the builders merchants on the site adjoining the proposed retail park. These works should be completed early in the New Year.
“Regarding progress concerning the retail park, an announcement from the developers is also expected in the New Year.”
