The team behind The Pier View in Cowes has spoken of its heartbreak after a major fire caused substantial damage to the popular High Street pub yesterday (Monday), admitting that they are still trying to come to terms with what has happened.
The blaze broke out shortly before 11:55 on Monday (2nd November), sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky above Cowes and prompting a major emergency response.
Thankfully, everyone is safe, with those behind the pub now thanking firefighters, customers and the wider community for their overwhelming support.
In an emotional statement, The Pier View has said:
“Today has been an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking day for everyone at The Pier View.
“A fire at the pub has caused substantial damage, and we’re still trying to take in what has happened.
“Thankfully, everyone is safe, and that is what matters most. A huge thank you to all the fire crews and emergency services who attended today. Their hard work and efforts have been incredible.”
As previously reported by Island Echo, the fire broke out in a kitchen, although the exact cause has yet to be determined. 4 pumping appliances from Newport, Ryde, Shanklin and East Cowes were mobilised to the scene, alongside an aerial ladder platform from Ryde.
Firefighters used main jets and hose reels to tackle the flames, gaining access to the rear of The Pier View and The Butcher’s Shop as efforts to contain the blaze continued.
During the incident, firefighters successfully rescued a number of pets, including a cat and a guinea pig.
The fire caused significant disruption across Cowes town centre, with roads cordoned off and access to the Red Jet terminal restricted. The nearby M&S Foodhall also temporarily closed due to smoke in the area, while Southern Vectis was forced to divert its Route 1 bus services.
An additional 2 Operational Command Units were brought across the Solent to support Isle of Wight firefighters as the emergency response continued into the afternoon.
The Pier View has also expressed its concern for neighbouring businesses affected by the blaze, including The Butcher Shop.
Its statement continued:
“Our thoughts are also very much with The Butcher Shop and all the other local businesses affected by today’s events. We know this will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone involved.
“We’ve already received so many lovely messages from our customers, friends and the local community. The kindness and support shown to us has been overwhelming, and we really cannot thank you enough.”
