A former sweet shop in the heart of the Isle of Wight’s largest town has been repainted as part of a transformation into an antiques store – although planning consent has not yet been granted.
Charlotte Elliott of Elliott’s Antiques and Collectables has applied for Listed Building Consent to repaint the front of 49 Union Street in Ryde and a ‘few areas inside’ with a ‘very tasteful dark blue’.
The new colour, which has already been applied, is said to be ‘much more in keeping’ with the environment, the Grade II Victorian building and ‘perfect’ for the Ryde Conservation Area, according to the applicant.
A submitted Design and Access Statement says the shop front previously looked ‘neglected, dirty and definitely in need of attention’.
“The existing shop part of 49 Union Street is currently empty and has been for over a year. Previously it had been a sweet shop – ‘All Things Sweet’ – for a number of years.
“My husband and I have recently taken over the lease and will be opening as an antiques shop. Whereas we understand the colours previously used may have been right for a sweet shop, they are not right for an antiques shop.
“The design concept and principals are very simple – to smarten the shop up and make it much more in keeping with a Victorian building in a conservation area.”
County Hall’s public consultation on application 25/01451/LBC finishes on 7th November, and a decision is expected on 4th December.
The shop was painted last week.

Wow great story dark plue paint..must be a slow news day..
Why the need for planning!, an open shop is better than a
closed shop.
It is not rocket science
and then fill it full of junk – sorry – antiques.
“and then fill it full of junk – sorry – antiques”…
No, I think you were right frst time,….
antiques = Victorian junk… very appropriate for a Victorian building in a conservation area
Looks smart and surely anything is better than an empty shop.?
Well said
