Adverse weather on the Solent is affecting cross-Solent travel this morning (Wednesday).
Red Funnel has advised that the 09:45 hi-speed Red Jet sailing from Southampton has been cancelled, as well as the 10:15 return from Cowes. This is due to the current tidal state exceeding the operational limits of the Red Jet 4.
All other cross-Solent operators are running to timetable at present.
An advisory has been issued by IW Met Service stating that large waves will combine with moderately high spring tides between 11:30 and 13:30. This could create large waves impacting the north and east coasts of the Island.
Over-topping of waves, as well as spray, sand and shingle being thrown onto walkways and roads is expected, leading to rather hazardous conditions if walking along the impacted coastline.
Areas in blue will see the most significant impacts, according to forecasters.
UPDATE @ 11:42 – Wightlink have now announced that due to sickness of an essential member of crew, the 15:00 sailing from Lymington and the 16:05 sailing from Yarmouth have both been cancelled today.

Don’t recall the MV Medina ever being cancelled, probably did, just can’t remember it !
back in the days when the car ferry used to take over and dock at the end of the pier, using a wooden gangway that staff pulled on with ropes to let foot passengers on or off, depending on which way the car ferry was going – fishbourne or portsmouth.
Those were the days when you had a bar on board the passenger ferries, comfy seats and they were “proper” boats. Took 25-35 minutes to cross to pompey.
they cancelled occasionally, however, as stated the car ferry used to come into the pier.
No such service now.
