A road traffic collision is causing significant travel delays in the Arreton Valley this afternoon (Thursday).
At least 2 vehicles have been involved in a smash near to Arreton Barns, with a car rear-ending a tipper truck. A third car is also possibly involved.
There are also significant delays in the area of Apse Heath with traffic queuing from Morrisons roundabout back towards Branstone and Horringford. It is thought a waste refuse lorry is to blame.
The busy Newport to Sandown road is experiencing higher than normal levels of traffic due to the closure of The Downs.
Motorists should avoid the area for the time being, if possible.

It is thought!!!!!! Not a speedy taxi???
Read it wrong sorry please forgive my stupidity.
The car that was involved in the accident at Arreton barns WAS a taxi.
I know getting caught behind a refuse truck can be frustrating but ‘blame’ is perhaps a bit strong.
We’d be in a sorry state without them.
Rubbish ?
If a motorist as report states the car ‘rear ended’ a tipper truck as a point of law surely it’s the cars fault for hitting truck.
Why is the refuse truck to blame?
These accidents are on the increase are holiday makers to blame, not used to our roads?
Looks like these drivers should retake their tests again.
Read the story again
I think YOU should. The waste refuse comment is about a different incident entirely.
the holiday makers know how to drive its the islanders. there is a crash on this island every week/day ALL year round its the islanders that need a retest
r bet – do shut up, there are far more accidents now than in the winter, all those damn holidaymakers are coming over here in their very own “tanks” and more than willing to be aggressive towards island careful drivers. The roads here are not meant for racing around at speed. Stop so many coming over here and the problem will go away. Simple. The channel islands can manage it.
KE9: I think you will find that there are plenty of Islanders who own Range Rovers, Discoveries etc. not just mainlanders. A lot of our roads are not built for this size of this regularly driven vehicle. The drivers of these large cars for me are more an irritating nuisance than anything due to their general arrogance and attitude that they own the road but they are rarely involved in incidents. It is smaller cars driven by poorly disciplined Islanders that cause most accidents.
Also islanders driving clapped out old BMW’s, they think that they own the roads! What a joke.
And what proof do you have that it is holiday makers causing all the RTC’s, none i would say. I toatlly agree with rbet, the standard of driving by islanders is the worst i have ever witnessed speaking from a professional opinion and not guesswork like yourself.
Agree totally. As an Islander, I agree that the standard of driving here is poor, and anyone who says that accidents have gone up and are the fault of mainlanders is in denial.Bit like ol’ Karn.
Most of the drivers are from the mainland originally anyway, their was a time when you came off the car ferries and the first thing you would see was a sign saying ‘Island roads are different, please drive carefully’. sadly, all to often Island born drivers are the first to be blamed when in reality it is mainland drivers to used to mainland road conditions.
Wait until Penny Feathers is built and filled with drivers. The roads will be littered with accidents all year, not just the Summer. This IS the good times. Watch and see.
Can’t see in story an accident with refuse lorry,it’s a tipper truck. Every time a refuse lorry mentioned in a story people have to rubbish it, please stop recycling same old
Mmmm, I think it’s Specsavers time for you Bob.
Two differing incidents Bob. One was a tipper truck and one was a refuse lorry. UNless you were going for humour with ‘rubbish’ analogies in which case it’s wheelie good.
No wonder we’ve all these accidents. We’re all just too frustrated being stuck in hot cars in traffic jams. Hardly surprising with the huge increase in holiday traffic, temporary traffic lights around every corner, closed roads and the doomed floating bridge once again out of action. Couldn’t Island Roads give us a bit of respite till September? Oh and build a bridge between Cowes and East Cowes instead of the floating bridge please.
Sorry Daphne, i’d just like to understand the implications of your comment. You seem to be suggesting that people being frustrated stuck in traffic is a reasonable excuse for them to then cause an accident. Any competent driver will accept that traffic is an inevitability, particularly on the island in Summer. Its annoying but no reason to then drive irresponsibly if indeed that is the case.
