The Conservative candidate for East Wight has been announced as Councillor Joe Robertson, beating off competition from 3 other candidates to face the public at the next General Election.
Robertson – who lives with his wife and children in St Helens – was 1 of only 2 candidates who actually lived in the area he will now be fighting to represent and serves as the Conservative group leader on the Isle of Wight Council.
Harriet Hadfield from Seaview who came 2nd said on social media:
“‘So… it wasn’t to be. Last night I lost this bid to be the Conservative candidate for Isle of Wight East against some tough competition. Luckily… I’ve faced much worse disappointment and mastered the art of picking myself up and moving on! A huge thank you to all those who’ve supported me – I’ve made the most incredible friends and I’ve been blown away by everyone’s belief in what we can do – together – for this wonderful Island and the people who live here.”
Suggestions are already being made in some circles that Hadfield could run as an Independent candidate at the next General Election.
The victorious Cllr Robertson is an in-house adviser to a national dementia charity having previously worked as a family lawyer and President of the Hampshire Law Society. He has also previously served as a governor of 2 Island Primary Schools, as a local trustee of Citizens Advice and as President of the Island branch of Campaign to Protect Rural England.
He stood for Parliament in 2019 coming a close 2nd in Labour’s traditionally safe heartland of Erith and Thamesmead.
As previously reported by Island Echo, he had already won public backing from Wayne Whittle, former Cabinet Member for Business and Regeneration on the Isle of Wight Council, and Chris Quirk, the Mayor of Shanklin. He also has the backing of Former Government minister, Lord Brabazon of Tara, and dementia campaigner, Lady Grylls.
When announcing his candidacy Robertson said:
““It is a huge honour to represent residents on the Isle of Wight Council and campaign about the things that matter most to Islanders like affordable housing, local NHS funding and regeneration of our towns.”
Island Echo has approached Mr Robertson for comment.

Another flamin galah for the kangaroo court.
At least he and Bob can have half a sausage each.
Any reason why there is no report of Bob Seely being roasted by Victoria Derbyshire?
Just another one desperate to get his nose into the trough, over £80,000 per year for just being an mp and behaving like a bunch of undisciplined and badly brought up children, they also have no interest in the needs and wants of the people.
I will only ever vote for an Independent.
Frankly the Tories have more chance of winning Euro Millions two weeks consecutively than they have of winning the next general election. All they are doing now is fronting cannon fodder to be sacked by the electorate. People have had enough. Good riddance to them.
Don’t be fooled by Labour, they to have the same W E F Leaders
History over the last 100 years shows that the lovely people of the UK vote in Tories regardless of how badly they are doing. Tory is the default status for the UK government. They only lose when things are really, really, really bad. Are things bad enough? I suppose once the repossessions start in an big way after further rate rises, things will get extremely bad.
UK Politics is now run by the W E F
Very sad when the main deciding factor seemed to be that he actually lives here.
In the real world, MPs should represent a constituency that they know (preferably by living there) rather than just being drones that cast a vote in favour of some greed-driven Tory policy.
Two for the price of one i think not
I’m very pleased about this. Joro is very popular down at the club and I’m sure he’ll be able to make a difference and a tidy little profit by running the East. He could probably contract it out and save himself a lot of headache.
Hopefully will be effective and show just how bad popup Bob really is
I see all the knuckle draggers are here with all the usual anti Tory nonsense.
I blame the WEF. Seems the most likely cause. Global business moguls and world leaders love a bit of [insert bullshit here]. They get off on it.
