The conviction of driveway fraudster Simon Regan, 1 of the biggest fraud prosecutions the Isle of Wight Council has ever dealt with, will be shown on television screens in the next few months.
Earlier this year, the authority was successful in bringing a case against Simon Regan, the director of Angel Coatings, who was jailed for 3 years for fraudulent trading, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Regan’s company laid resin drives and pathways, charging customers thousands of pounds for work which was not up to scratch.
Following the successful court outcome in March, the Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards officers were followed in the Summer by cameras for programme, Defenders UK.
It is a BBC One show which highlights the work authorities are doing to protect the public from scam artists and con men.
The trial of Regan lasted nearly 5 weeks at Southampton Crown Court and heard evidence from 65 witnesses across the Island, Hampshire and Devon where his companies had committed offences, valued at around £300,000.
Regan’s offending included gross overcharging, works that were poorly or incompetently installed, worthless 10-year guarantees and not returning deposits paid when cancellation rights were exercised.
The court was told Regan would make threats to rip up driveways if he did not receive payment in full and threatened customers when civil action was attempted.
He was unanimously found guilty of the offences, sentenced to 3 years in prison and was told he was not allowed to be a company director for 6 years. A proceeds of crime hearing is due to take place next year to determine how much he must pay back.
Defenders UK will air either at the end of the year or early in 2024.

We too were victims of his shoddy workmanship, but didn’t find out about his prosecution until it was too late.
I bet he ain’t the only dodgy tradesman on the island.
From what I see on a daily basis so many engineering
Companies, Builders and Companies such as Island Roads
Tow equipment on trailers with registration plates different
to the actual vehicle registration plate.
I always pay extra and bring mainland companies over to
carry out various work when required, costs more
but more professional.
We were also victims of this vile person we were told including by trading standards before it went to court to get them to repair the shoddy workmanship
When it went to court we were not part of the complaint listed feel extremely cheated
So why didn’t you communicate with Trading Standards to inform them that he hadn’t rectified the problems? The team at Trading Standards have done an excellent job in getting the case to court.
There are probably a lot more people like you, it might be worth reaching out, seeing who else didn’t know about the initial case, you can then bring another case against him. At the very least you should be included in the proceeds of crime act and receive compensation. You have nothing to lose.
Plenty of people made complaints to Citizens Advice then onto Trading Standards. So why didn’t you? Or is is a case of Island Apathy Syndrome until complainants have a chance to gain recompense.
Is that all he got?? Poor people who he ripped off they should all get compensation maybe from all the money the scum made?
It will make a change from watching Alan Titchmarsh showing the Island
in another light.
Let the people of the country see what really goes on, on the island.
Well done to everyone involved in catching this vile bloke…
