Isle of Wight Council leader Dave Stewart has held his last community meeting before Thursday’s local elections and raised over £255 for Help for Heroes in the process.
The meeting at Niton Village Hall on Saturday was attended by more than 50 local residents from Chale, Niton and Whitwell.
Cllr Stewart gave an update on a number of important local matters he had been working on including progress with Undercliff Drive, his response to recent planning applications and developments for new facilities for Niton Football Club. He also outlined to the meeting the priority list for the CARS (Community Action Road Safety) project he is helping with.
The new licensees of the White Lion Inn also addressed the meeting and they confirmed it would be open by the end of May – a move that has a strong level of support locally.
The money for Help for Heroes has been raised after Cllr Stewart provided tea and coffee at the events and he invited local people to donate to the charity in lieu of a charge.
Dave said:
“The sum shows the generosity of local people and I thank them for helping me raise it for such a fantastic charity during these events.
“My roots have always been at the local level and if I am re-elected this week this will continue to be the case and these events will continue as I think they do go down well in the community.
“I hope Island Conservatives will secure enough seats for me to lead the Isle of Wight Council on Thursday because I am keen to provide strong leadership to develop the opportunities to secure our future.”
