Residents and motorists alike have been left confused by conflicting information about the forthcoming night time closure of Brading High Street.
As previously reported by Island Echo, an 8-mile diversion will be in place for those heading between Ryde and Sandown as Brading High Street is to be closed overnight for around 2 weeks as a result of utility works.
The road, which is used heavily by those heading between the 2 major towns, will be closed between West Street and Coach Lane from 18:30-06:00 each night between Tuesday 31st January and Wednesday 15th February. This is to allow for fibre broadband works to be undertaken.
However, locals have been left confused by road signage stating that the road would remain closed overnight until 1st March.
There is further confusion as Southern Vectis say that between Monday and Thursday the road will be closed between the hours of 18:30 and 02:00 and on Fridays it will be closed between 18:30 and 23:30. At weekends, it is said the road will remain open as normal.
A spokesperson for Island Roads has said:
“Under Wight Fibre’s current permit, Brading High Street will be closed until February 15 to allow work to upgrade Broadband infrastructure.
“We will speak to them today to ensure their roadside signage confirms this date”.
During the closure motorists will have to divert via Carpenters Road, Upper Green Road, Station Road, Embankment Road, Kings Road, Sherbourne Street, Foreland Road, Steyne Road, Sandown Road, Hillway Road, Bembridge Road to Marshcombe Shute – or the unofficial diversion route via West Lane, Ashey Road and Brading Downs.

Ryde Roads off of Monkton Street are very confusing
Whoever is responsible for placing signage needs to clean up their act,
You get to a,closed part without signage alerting you it’s closed.
Who will pay for the extra fuel consumed by all the vehicles having to divert whilst we have a cost of living crisis?
You with who else
I expect the government will pick up that tab.
Good point.
2 choices
1) IW Council could reduce Council Tax
2) which ever Company who is responsible for the works being carried out could compensate persons
What planet are you on!?
Let’s hope they fix all the banging manhole covers down the high Street
“Under Wight Fibre’s current permit, Brading High Street will be closed until February 15 to allow work to upgrade Broadband infrastructure. By upgrade, do they mean fixing a bad job they did before, OR is this all new work ?
They are getting the broadband ready for the 15 minute cities.
Not sure that’s exactly clarified the situation, the Island Roads spokesman said ” Brading High St will be closed until the 15th of Feb”. What all the time ? or just during certain night time hours ? The statement just adds to the confusion.
Piss up and Brewery come to mind!!!!!!!
