Coastguard Rescue Officers from Ventnor and The Needles are on scene alongside Bembridge RNLI at Culver Down near Sandown this evening (Saturday).
Concerns have been raised that someone may be stuck on the cliff between Whitecliff Bay and Yaverland.
HM Coastguard responded to the scene at around 18:40.
Bembridge’s All Weather Lifeboat is currently searching the coastline on the south side of the downland. The lifeboat was already out on another tasking when the alarm was raised, according to the RNLI.
Coastguard Rescue Officers are currently carrying out a search along the cliff top and are using rope equipment to safely inspect from the edge.
An Island Echo reader has reported seeing 3 individuals walking from Whitecliff Bay towards Culver Down, with the tide rising behind them – but it is unclear if this is related to the ongoing search.
UPDATE @ 20:27 – It has been confirmed that search and rescue teams have been working to locate a walker who was reported as missing and possibly in difficulty getting to safety with a rising tide.
Bembridge RNLI have now stood down from the search after Coastguard Rescue Officers confirmed eyes on the male casualty, who is making their way to safety.
Other resources are expected to stand down shortly.
HM Coastguard are advising people to take extra care during these extraordinary times. Once again unbelievable some people
Yes Mary, unbelievable as is being over opinionated!
Hope the idiot gets charged for wasting emergency services time
Why dont these people stick to the path once again wasting the emg services think of other people why dont you
I’m sure these people didn’t set out to waste anybody’s time. Please stop whinging with all the others why don’t you.
As for you “Old bean” it’s a pity you can’t get charged with rudeness and ignorance, still there’s always hope in the police state we are heading for.
Do shut up you miserable old sod
Come on, it’s all good practice for the emergency services. Be honest, would you rather be sat in your car bored to death waiting for a shout, or tediously scraping the barnacles off the hull at the lifeboat station when you could be out and about in the glorious weather!
Maybe a contribution to fuel costs would be appreciated …if it was the person who walked himself to safety that made that 999 call. I suspect it wasn’t.
The report doesn’t actually give the circumstances of the missing walker. To quick to jump to conclusions as is normal!
If only people took more care
Police
You would think these walkers would know better, did I put walkers??
