As a tribute to a much-loved player, coach and secretary, Newport IW Football Club will be staging the Chris Cheverton Memorial Match on Saturday (22nd August) at St George’s Park.
Chris joined Newport Football Club in 1965 and scored on his first team debut. In 1973, Chris was appointed player-coach by then manager Roy Shiner and in 1981, although continuing to play for the first team, Chris helped out with Newport Youth. He retired from playing in 1990.
During his Newport playing career he made 204 first team appearances, scoring 24 goals in the process. In 1982 Chris was appointed as Club Secretary, a position which he held with great esteem for over 20 years.
Chris was much admired by everyone at the club in the way that he carried out his duties and the way in which he represented the club. Sadly, Chris passed away last month.
In Chris’ memory, ex-Newport players are coming together for a special match on Saturday evening – The Newport Islanders v The Newport Mainlanders.
Kick-off is at 19:30 and all proceeds from the match will go to the Stroke Association.
