The Phoenix Choir will be in concert on Saturday 9th April in aid of Parkinsons UK.
One person in every 500 has Parkinsons. That is about 127,000 people in the UK. Each year approximately 10,000 people are diagnosed. Parkinsons is a complex condition that effects different people in different ways – the symptoms and how quickly they progress differ from person to person. Many people who get Parkinsons are aged 50 or over but one in 20 is under the age of 40 when diagnosed.
There is currently no cure but drugs and treatments are available to manage many of the symptoms. Parkinsons UK is the Parkinson’s support and research charity. For more than 40 years they have been working to find a cure.
The Isle of Wight branch of Parkinsons UK is one of around 365 local groups, run by volunteers who have experience of Parkinsons. They welcome family members and carers and offers local assistance. Amongst the activities arranged on the Island by this active group are coffee mornings, holidays, voucher schemes, curling, luncheons, aqua fit and exercise classes.
The 50-strong mixed Phoenix Choir will be singing their wide range of songs ‘From Pavarotti to Presley’ with many new numbers in their 2016 programme. The concert will be held at St Saviours Church, Shanklin and commence at 19:45. A raffle and interval refreshments will be available.
There is no admission charge but there will be a retiring collection.
