The story of women in aviation begins, it seems, with a vicar, an aristocrat and a woman in a lighter-than-air balloon basket! This was how Wight Aviation Museum’s guest speaker Sally Smith began her enthralling and amusing talk about women and aviation on WAM’s open day.
Sally was speaking at the Wight Aviation Museum’s Open Day last weekend and was introduced by the Leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Karl Love. It was held in WAM’s new Hangar Two.
There were a number of displays covering WAM’s “Education Work” in schools and with youth groups, “Nothing to see here” an exciting and history making project, with more details in the coming months and the “Bring the Spartan Home” which is WAM’s major fundraising project to bring the last remaining 3 seater Spartan aircraft home from New Zealand to the Isle of Wight, where it was built!
Helen Blake, chair person of WAM summed it up, saying:
“It was a great day for WAM to showcase some of the projects we are involved with for the next season. A lot of hard work from the WAM Team resulted in an interesting and enjoyable day for the many visitors who attended.”
Though WAM will be closing to the public over the winter months keep an eye on the WAM website https://wightaviationmuseum.org.uk/ for information about our projects throughout the winter closure.
As usual the museum will be open to all visitors on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays from 10:00 to 15:00 each day until the end of October.
