This week, there will be further changes across the St Mary’s Hospital site as works to build the hospital’s new emergency care floor get underway.
Work on the emergency floor will see the co-locating of the existing emergency department, urgent treatment centre and short stay facilities with the addition of a new frailty unit, as well as the introduction of a separate, dedicated emergency entrance will also be created.
The changes continue as the next part of the £30.4m Investing in Our Future Programme aimed at improving the Island’s NHS services across the board.
From this week, the current drop off area will be temporarily relocated to the main car park, whilst the pedestrian crossing near the main entrance will be relocated and an additional crossing will be put in place near the ambulance emergency drop off point.
Hoardings will be placed around the current main entrance with the new pedestrian footpath, diverting the public around the area of works.
The improvements, that were classed as once-in-a-generation works, started at the end of November.
Here is a video about what the changes will look like.

What the report should say is: hoardings have been placed around the works forcing pedestrians who are approaching the main entrance from the South side of the hospital to have to walk in the road and risk getting run over. Whoever did the risk assessment, presuming one was even carried out, should be sacked.
