A car has careered through railings, a traffic island and taken out a lamppost before coming to rest on its side in a road traffic collision on Forest Road in Newport tonight (Friday).
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called alongside colleagues from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and local police officers shortly before 22:30.
The incident has occurred between Hunnyhill Primary School and Hampshire Cresent.
Substantial damage has been caused to the street furniture near to where a pedestrian footpath connects Forest Road to Whitesmith Road.
A local resident has told Island Echo how they heard several loud bangs before seeing 2 people running away from the scene.
Police officers, including a police dog, have surrounded the area and are on the hunt for the occupants of the vehicle.
UPDATE @ 23:10 – 1 suspect has been located hiding in a nearby garden on Whitesmith Road, which runs parallel with Forest Road.
The male has been detained on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and is being taken into custody at Newport Police Station.
It is thought that 2 other people have also been detained in connection with the crash.
1 fire appliance from Newport, manned by Green Watch, is providing scene safety. An ambulance officer is also present.
Stag Lane Motors have arrived to recover the badly damaged black Nissan Qashqai – which is now unrecognisable.
Meanwhile, engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks are dealing with the severely damaged lamp post while operatives from Island Roads have started the clear-up operation.
The road has been temporarily closed in both directions while the recovery of the vehicle is carried out.
UPDATE @ 23:40 – The ambulance service and fire service have now stood down from the incident.
The road is expected to reopen to traffic in due course.

Absolute dickheads they drive up there like idiots and running from scene not a care in the world!!
It’s so tempting to say: “Serves you right!” to them, even if they are hurt
I’m tired of saying ‘yet another single vehicle accident’
This isn’t a typical trip out to buy some shopping. Its a stolen car driven by a complete numpty, so likelihood for it to crash was very high, fortunately for everyone it was a single vehicle accident.and no one else was hurt
Then dont say it !!! Not exactly a standard incident is it ??
Then stop saying it !!
Selfish bloody idiots, when will people start thinking of others, makes my blood boil that people are so wreck less and selfish
If brains were sh*t they wouldn’t have a sniff
Chavs going for a joyride
Bring back nation service !!!
That will teach them a lesson or two
I doubt it Bob, they can’t treat them in the services, like they used too
Wouldn’t last the week out ….be crying for mummy
I heard a big bang and then saw lights. I went out to see that a car had been flipped onto it’s side. What another accident has done. Thought the island was safe. There people obviously are selfish enough to run and not even check if they have hit someone. Luckily no one was injured and gladly to know the people have been detained. Idiots all I can say is what Idiots.
It beggars belief that these people are not learning anything from accident reports
If guilty the driver needs serious jail time. Passengers are probably guilty of several offences and need hitting hard by the courts
Once again our police have caught them. Hope the courts don’t go soft and let the police down
Sad thing is, when the driver does a runner, along with others, the old bill have a really tough time proving who was driving.Let’s hope they get the prrof they need!
If no one coughs then they all should get done and pay all the costs including the repair to to the street furniture.
This Island full of natural beauty is rapidly becoming a danger to life, whether it be from dangerous driving, drunk morons, drugged up louts or armed thieves.
All the ambulance service/fire service can do is mop up the carnage after the event. The police service on the Island like much of the Country is totally understaffed and unable to take control.
A certain element are running riot and destroying life and property on an almost daily basis, we deserve better.
Only a few months ago we were promised from our new government more police then along came Covid 19. We remain a very rich Country, without a strong police force we are heading for much worse.
Our government promises much and backs it up with very little.
If brains were taxed, these two would be up for a rebate!!!!
Hope the owner was not a key worker and need it for work
Ridiculous behaviour! Some people really just don’t care about anything else other than their own reckless self gratification.
Lol twats
You wouldn’t
be laughing if it was your car they stole. Twat.
give it a rest will you -“you wouldn’t be laughing if it was your car they stole” – the guy is laughing at them for being incompetent twats who couldn’t even drive a car properly.
All thew kurbs on those chicanes should be painted white so that they can be seen on a dark foggy night with oncoming vehicle headlights blinding you. OK they have a bollard but they are quite wide and the bollard is set well back.
Obviously took the chicane at a mental speed and lost control. What is going on with these idiot stealing cars and going for a dangerous joyride putting others lives at risk. Bring back national service for these young offenders !!
I seen the whole thing and they were doing about 50-60 through there it was ridiculous
Which is the greater offence?
Deliberately choosing to steal somebody’s valuable property – the car
or
Driving stupidly without a care to their own, and their passengers’ safety.
Their attitude appears to be, nothing can hurt me, look at all my mates that have walked away from crashes.
Then to cap it all, if they are caught, the courts seem to pass a tiny sentence on them which seems to give them a clear signal that they can carry on doing the same.
The same seems to apply to the thieves, what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine, but when something of theirs is stolen, then hell breaks out ! ! !
I wonder if they were “lent” the car? Even 20 year old cars need the keys these days. If you lend a car to someone without a licence or insurance you’re liable. So your best defence is to say they took it without asking. Police will advise you to say that.
The other side of the coin…. why are car owners leaving their vehicles ‘unprotected’ ? If you’re stupid enough to leave you car keys lying around then expect you car to get nicked..OR if you have a decent car with keyless ignition etc. then the ONLY safe way to protect your car is to put your keys in a ‘faraday pouch’. And while you’re at it, the spare set too.You get two for a fiver on E-Bay. That will stop the wireless cloners/duplicators from taking your pride and joy. Five quid to protect £20K + of car is a no brainer
What needs to happen in these cases, is the court passes a requirement that the cost of a new vehicle, replacing the street furniture, recovery of the vehicle and any ancillary cleanup is passed on to all three offenders. If they can’t afford to pay, take their property to the same value, like bailiffs do. That should make people think before they commit crime.
Shame they are not all in wheel chairs. We will have to ‘keep’ the rubbish from cradle to grave anyway, at least if crippled, they would not harm others. Maybe next time.
I actually look forward to driving on the mainland (even in Portsmouth!) – it’s so easy and safe compared to the Island these days (I’m an advanced driver). I think that there should be a speed limit imposed on drivers of less than 3yrs experience and who are under the age of 25yrs, not to mention a statutory ‘P’ sticker on their car for up to 2yrs after passing the test/s. Even yesterday (Tuesday) I had idiots speed up close behind me whilst I was displaying a ‘Child on Board’ sign!
