An electric car and a bus have collided on a mini roundabout in Newport this evening (Monday) forcing the closure of one of the main roads through the town.
Police have closed South Street in both directions as a result of a collision between a Hyundai and a Southern Vectis double decker bus.
The crash occurred at just before 19:00.
Island Echo understands the Hyundai was performing a u-turn on the roundabout when it came into contact with the near side of the bus, smashing the glass doors and causing some side damage to the double decker.
The Hyundai was ‘dragged’ along the road for a short distance, coming to rest wedged between a traffic island and the side of the bright green bus.
Recovery of the electric car is underway and the bus is expected to be driven back to the depot.
No injuries have been reported.
UPDATE @ 20:00 – South Street has now reopened in both directions.
UPDATE @ 21:37 – Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis general manager, has said:
”One of our route 5 buses was involved in a collision this evening just after Coppins Bridge in Newport.
“Early indications suggest a third party vehicle indicated to turn left at a mini-roundabout but proceeded to do a u-turn instead. The bus then collided with it.
“No passengers on-board the bus or in the third party vehicle were injured. However, our driver was hit by a glass fragment and suffered a minor cut. He is also understandably shaken and is being supported by our management team.
“There was serious damage to both vehicles, and police attended the scene. We are helping them as they carry out an investigation into the full circumstances behind the incident.”
Who performs a “U” turn on a roundabout!
and how do you go left about a roundabout?
Someone who wants to back the way they came?
Another impatient IOW idiot having to learn the hard way once again. Hopefully that will teach them not to try and cut a double decker bus off at a roundabout. See it too much on the island.
More proof Caulkheads don’t understand the meaning of a
Roundabout.
Banned and prosecuted at least that’s one ev off the road..
Vehicles already on the roundabout have priority, I believe, and an assumption should not be made (including when they’re indicating) that they are exiting when they may be continuing around the roundabout.
I’m sure I’ll be corrected if the Highway Code says different.
The highway code does say “Avoid making U-turns at mini-roundabouts” (Rule 188), but also says, in the following sentence, “Beware of others doing this”
So in this case it looks like both vehicles did not follow the rules
what I don’t understand, is why the bus is completely on the wrong side of the road… (the wrong side of the bollards) with it’s wheels against the wrong curb…
with the length of the bus,.. and the fact that the rear of the bus is only just off the roundabout, it MUST have been on the wrong side of the roundabout!
There’s no way a little car would have pushed the bus against that curb… unless it was on the wrong side of teh roundabout to start with…
there is no bollard on the bus’s entry to the roundabout …
so it looks like, rather than waiting for the car to compete whatever manouver it was doing,.. the bus drove on the wrong side of the roundabout to go around the car… rather than waiting for the car to turn (& then hit the car as it was trying to do a U turn.)
OK, so the car, perhaps, shouldn’t have been doing a u-turn, but the bus should have waited until the road was clear, and then proceeded on the correct side.
The bus moved over trying to avoid the car.
