Two members of the Wightlink-LCM Systems Cycle Race Team travelled to Eelmore last Wednesday to take part in the 3rd category, one hour race at the start of a busy week of racing for the team.
Stuart Waite and Ian Hayden set the pace from the start but soon into the race Hayden was taken down by another rider and unfortunately forced to retire with some nasty looking road rash. Waite went on to keep the race together and took second in the bunch sprint.
Meanwhile on Sunday (26th July) two members of the team travelled to Winchester park and ride criterium race.
Sam Baker and Stuart Waite lined up in wet and windy conditions to take part in the 3rd category race which was 45 minutes + 3 laps.
Approximately 25 minutes into the race Baker went into the tight bottom corner too fast and had to unclip to avoid going straight on into a hedge, which distanced him from the group and unfortunately he couldn’t get back on.
Waite then decided to go for a solo breakaway, which worked perfectly and he won by at least half a lap on the pursuing riders.
To round off a busy week for the team, two members of the team once again travelled to the Eelmore circuit in Hampshire yesterday (Wednesday 29th July) to take part in the 3rd category race, which this time was 50 minutes plus 5 laps.
Continuing his solid form, Stu Waite was joined by teammate Matt Allsopp (pictured right). Together they set the pace from the start, repeatedly riding off the front for the first half of the race.
They were then pulled back by the chasing peloton, but kept themselves within the top few riders near the front until the inevitable sprint finish. Waite got the better of Allsopp by half a wheel and the pair came over the line in 3rd and 4th places respectively.
This great result for the riders and the team means that both have now moved up to 2nd category, and will race at that level for the rest of this season and into next season.
