A burst water main in Winford has not only left hundreds of properties without water but has flooded the road.
Local residents in the Newchurch and Winford areas say that pressure was low this morning (Monday), but by lunchtime supply had been lost altogether.
Water is gushing down the hill at Forest Road and across the carriageway into the ironically named Watery Lane.
Temporary traffic lights have been erected for nearby Wight Fibre works, but are conveniently placed whilst contractors begin work to repair the burst main.
A Southern Water spokesman has said:
“We’re sorry some customers PO36 area may have suffered low pressure or loss of water.
“We are on site and further information will be provided as soon as possible.
“For the latest information, please check our website and social media pages”.
UPDATE @ 17:30 – Southern Water has said that they are preparing a bottled water station in the are whilst they undertake the repairs. Details of its location will be announced as soon as possible.
Deliveries of water will also be arranged to customers on their priority register.
“We would like to apologise to customers in the Winford area of Sandown, on the Isle of Wight, who may be experiencing low water pressure or loss of supply.
“We understand the inconvenience caused, but would urge customers not to approach colleagues fixing the burst in Forrest Road for information and advice. The teams need to focus on the repair to get supplies returned as soon as possible, and we do not want anyone to put themselves in an unsafe position.”

And Wight Fibre was there digging up the road. It couldn’t possible involve them could it. NO VERY UNLIKELY.
I’m sure it would have been them. Been hitting drains over west Wight too. Never seen the roads so flooded…
Put your tin hat back on, conspiracy theorist
No it wasn’t them, it was a massive split in the plastic main pipe further down the road.
It was not wight fibre it was a massive split in the main plastic pipe at the bottom of the road
I know, i heard you the first time.
Very bad communications from Southern water. Incident has been ongoing since this morning and all they tell us is to check their website, Which does not even mention the incident!!!!!!. Vast majority of affected customers ( hundreds) have no access to emergency supplies bottles of water, myself, I’m taking vital medicines by using tonic water ( No, not with gin)
Unlikely to be Wight Fibre. They’ve been ” Working ” in Forest road since last August. Thing is though i haven’t seen one of the lazy sod’s do any work yet.
Southern Water a disgrace. No water all day – no information anywhere. Their website useless – their social media pages useless. They just only put something up on Twitter because we made a complaint. I’d cancel them if it were any other business…. but I’m thirsty….
Where is the water point I would like a cuppa tea as been at work since 7am
Almost certainly Wight Fibre workers to blame. They’ve been here in Forest Road since August last year when the job was only supposed to take them three months in total. Just walked down to the end of Forest Road where i suspected the water station would be, only to be told that they have now run out of bottled water, but if the problem continues into tomorrow then they will try and get some more to hand out. Very poor effort.
Not the end of the world is it !
Can’t one of you lot pop down the shop ffs ?
Oh what a shame I’m sure everything will be back to normal, like in The Philippines flooding everywhere but no one else is concerned about this.
whoever are complaining about the chaps who are working for wight fibre in Forest Road Winford they are not lazy and are working against all odds to keep to a schedule, the water main burst yesterday WAS NOT DUE TO THEM, it was a old pipe that fractured nowhere near where they were working, they have been very plesant and helpfull at all times, so please give credit when due, not hurtful comments.
I’ll be nice to them when they actually do some work for a change
