The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team have carried out a controlled explosion on a suspected piece of ordnance on the outskirts of Newport this evening (Tuesday).
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts travelled across the Solent on the 17:00 sailing from Portsmouth, arriving in Newport on blue lights and sirens shortly after 18:00.
It didn’t take long for the decision to be made to destroy the object – thought to be a 2 inch mortar shell – by means of a controlled explosion, which was carried out in a field off Horsebridge Hill between Prior Crescent on Dodnor Lane.
Residents have reported hearing the extremely loud bang at just gone 18:30.
Thanks to Darren Wray for sharing this aerial footage of the moment the explosion took place…

Reminds me of an old theatre joke.
“Hark! A shistol pot”
Take two.
“Hark! A shostel pit”
Grr! take three.
“Hark! A postel shit”
“Sod it! Did y’hear that bang?”
