Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts have this afternoon (Wednesday) carried out a controlled explosion on 10 shells discovered on the banks of the River Medina.
The mainland-based Ordinance Disposal Team from Portsmouth were called to Medina Yard on Arctic Road, Cowes earlier today when 10 small shells ranging between 2-3 inches in size were found at the boat yard.
At just gone 13:00, a controlled explosion was carried out to destroy the shells in-situ, according to a Royal Navy spokesperson.
It is believed the 10 explosives dated from World War II and had been brought ashore during dredging works.
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary also attended the scene, with the Marine Police Unit closing the River Medina close to the scene.
No one has been injured.
