The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team from Portsmouth have been called in to investigate and make safe a piece of suspected ordnance at Steephill Cove in Ventnor.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team were first tasked to investigate the potentially explosive discovery between Ventnor and St Lawrence a few days ago, but tides and weather conditions prevented any action being taken.
Now, an area of beach has been cordoned off by the Coastguard as they wait for the tide to fall enough to re-expose the object. 3 Bomb Disposal experts are standing by having travelled across the Solent to the Island later this morning.
Once the suspected ordnance has been examined a decision will be made on the best course of action – which could include detonating the item by means of a controlled explosion.
UPDATE @ 15:30 – The Explosion Ordnance Disposal team have confirmed that the object is safe. It has now been removed from the beach to prevent further calls to the Coastguard.
Resources have now been stood down from the incident.

Very surprised the heavy winds and bad weather in the Solent didn’t bring up a lot more bombs! So close to Portsmouth and Southampton who were heavily hit during the wars.
Uhh steephill cove not in the Solent!!
Maybe brush up on your geography.
West Wighter – yes, I think we all know that Steephill Cove is not in Solent. Look again and you will see that the text reads: “3 Bomb Disposal experts are standing by HAVING TRAVELLED ACROSS the Solent to the Island”.
Maybe brush up on your literacy?
