Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts are in attendance at Seagrove Bay in Seaview tonight (Sunday) amid fears a piece of historic ordnance has been discovered. A member of the public alerted Island Echo to the potentially explosive find at around 15:40 this afternoon – having photographed the object around 11:30 – and soon went on to inform the Coastguard of the discovery in the sand at Seagrove. Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team was mobilised to conduct an initial search, with the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team in Portsmouth kept abreast of the situation. Now, it has been decided by the bomb disposal experts that the object requires physical examination and that it potentially poses a risk to human life. As the tide falls, Coastguard Rescue Officers from Bembridge are searching the beach alongside military personnel in the hopes of locating – and then identifying – the object. If found, it may be decided that a controlled explosion is required UPDATE – The incident has been stood down. It has been determined the object is not an explosive.
