Firefighters are tackling a blaze at the household waste and recycling centre at Lynnbottom on the outskirts of Newport tonight (Sunday).
5 appliances and a water carrier have been mobilised by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to the scene off Briddlesford Road, where a large fire appears to have broken out within 2 of the open waste skips.
Flames can be seen reaching for the night sky with smoke billowing across Standen Heath.
The incident, which began at around 19:30, is thought to involve fire crews from Newport, Ryde, Shanklin, Sandown and Ventnor.
There are no reported injuries and the fire occurred when the Council-owned site was closed to the public.
UPDATE @ 21:16 – The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that the fire has affected 2 large, open skips used to dispose electronics and furniture.
The incident is described as being under control.
It is currently planned to open Lynnbottom as normal at 10:00 on Monday, subject to a safety and damage assessment.
UPDATE @ 22:09 – Firefighters are set to continue a controlled burn overnight, expected to be take around 5 hours.
UPDATE MONDAY – Lynnbottom tip is to remained closed today, the Isle of Wight Council has confirmed.

Well they complain that households do not dispose of batteries correctly. However I witnessed the battery bag on the top of our black bin just over 2 weeks ago was put inside it and not retrieved before the bin was emptied into the back of the truck and they blamed households for not correctly disposing batteries when the belt at Forest Road caught fire!
Good decision to let it burn as only rubbish items and no life at risk , and pretty contained in those skips
