Lynnbottom tip will remain closed today (Monday) as a fire is still smouldering away, posing a risk to members of the public.
It was at around 19:30 last night that a blaze broke out at the household waste and recycling centre off Briddlesford Road, Downend, as first reported by Island Echo. Flames could be seen reaching for the night sky with smoke billowing across Standen Heath.
5 fire appliances and a water carrier from Newport, Cowes, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor were mobilised to the scene by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which remained on scene for several hours as the fire crews managed a controlled burn.
The fire has been burning throughout the night in 2 large, open bins used for electronics and furniture.
The Isle of Wight Council says that with the bins still smouldering, the site is unsafe to open. However, commercial customers using the main weighbridge to access the landfill and Windrow composting can still access those sites.
Briddlesford Road has been closed in both directions due to smoke drifting across the carriageway.
UPDATE @ 17:56 – The Isle of Wight Council says that Lynnbottom will re-open as normal tomorrow (Tuesday).
Any excuse not to open that place.
Would you rather ignore health and safety , putting the public at risk ?
Wondering if it was lithium batteries
