Concerns are rapidly growing that the Isle of Wight has been hit by avian flu after the discovery of dead birds across the Island – including more than 40 in the West Wight.
Earlier this week DEFRA was alerted to the discovery of 3 gulls in the area of Culver Parade, Sandown – including at the town’s canoe lake.
Now, it has been learnt by Island Echo that more than 40 gulls have been found deceased on the shingle at the remote Scratchell’s Bay near to The Needles.
Other sightings of dead gulls have been reported on the banks of the River Medina in Newport, at Luccombe and on the shore at Gurnard.
Anyone who discovers a dead bird is advised to keep a safe distance and to not touch the animal.
If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them straight away to the DEFRA helpline on 03459 33 55 77.

too many flying ants guzzled, ODeed
I’m sure the 5G conspiracy theorists will be along soon
Or blame Brexit.
Aren’t you concerned that birds are dying on YOUR island and the cause you stupid idiot
Yawn Yawn
Totally agree
Wild and domestic bird food seed should have treatment in it to prevent the spread
So is it definitely bird flu, or the heat and lack of food for them.
Flying ants
I noticed alot of gulls scratching around on the ground arou d Newport Town last weekend with was out of the ordinary.
One got squashed on copins bridge. I Thought it was just where the chick’s are just leaving the nests and part of the breeding cycle or something.
Maybe the heat has an effect on them.
Flying ants
Yippee! Peace and quiet from those damn gulls at last.
What a nasty remark, maybe you will suffer like them poor Gulls
I endure their noise where I work. The constant filthy mess from above, is far from fun. This year they have nested near my home, I have their incessant noise 24/7
My hope for them is extinction, it truly fills my heart with joy they may be dying in large numbers.
This may offend the damn fools that see them as cute, same damn fools that also feed them most likely.
The same thing happened to the Native Americans.
So does this make you happy ?
No, I thought not !
