Binstead fought their way through to the semi-finals of the Isle of Wight Challenge Cup by narrowly beating Cowes Sports Reserves by the best of 5 goals.
Binstead opened the scoring through a Jamie Dyer penalty (1-0). Josh Neale equalized for the Yachtsmen by slotting home a cross from his twin brother Caleb (1-1). Darren Powell then put Binstead ahead going into the half-time break by means of a close-range header from a corner.
HT: Binstead & COB 2-1 Cowes Sports Reserves
Ashley Brett put the Yachtsmen back on level terms for a 2nd time by powering a header from a Chris Elliot cross past Tom McInnes in the Binstead goal (2-2). Brett then thought he should have been awarded a penalty and was then sinbinned by referee Ben Orton for voicing his opinion on the subject. While Cowes were down to 10 men, Jacob Morley scored the winning goal for Binstead with a sliding challenge that beat the young Cowes keeper.
FT: Binstead & COB 3-2 Cowes Sports Reserves
After the game, Darren Powell for Binstead said:
“It was a well contested game right up until the final whistle, superbly refereed by Ben Orton.”
For Cowes Sports Reserves, Ashley Brett said:
“We seem to be getting quite unfortunate and losing or drawing to late goals. But we’re a young team though (apart from myself and a couple of others) so the future is bright.”
Shanklin 5-5 Brading Town (Shanklin won 5-3 on penalties)
Shanklin advanced to the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup by beating rivals Brading Town on penalties in a 10-goal thriller at the County Ground. The scorers for Shanklin were: Alek Przepolewski (2), Pete Wilson, Ryan Hill and an own goal. On target for the Romans were: Dan Vale (hat trick), Aaron Bennett and Scott Lawson.
Shanklin centre forward Kyle Drew (who scored the winning penalty) said:
“We didn’t turn up for the first half, and Brading found themselves 3-1 up at half time. We got a bollocking at half time, and the manager (Paul Haward) made a few changes which ended up paying off, as we found ourselves equalising in the final minute to make it 5-5. I would like to say good luck to (Brading manager) Lawts and the boys on the remainder of the season!”
Brading Town manager Steve Lawton said:
“On another day, we could have found ourselves in the semi-final.
“I’m still scratching my head as to how we lost that game. First half, we played some outstanding football and should have been out of sight. 2 poor, poor goals either side of half time let them back in, but we should have still seen the game out at 4-2 then 5-4.
“Penalties are a lottery and unfortunately, we missed one of ours and that was that.”
Sandown & Lake 2-0 Oakfield
Sandown scored twice in the final 10 minutes to beat Oakfield in the quarter-final of the Challenge Cup at the Fairway Sports Complex.
The first half was very tight with little to choose between the 2 sides. Sandown dominated the 2nd half but appeared vulnerable to Oakfield counter attacks.
The deadlock between the 2 teams was finally broken with 10 minutes of the game remaining though a Sonny Mulholland free kick from the edge of the Sandown penalty area (1-0). Then, a minute or so before the final whistle, George Johnson made victory certain for the home side by knocking the ball into the Oakfield net in a goalmouth scramble (2-0).
