The discovery of a suspicious device on the beach at Sandown has led to the closure of Culver Parade this afternoon (Wednesday).
An item – which appears to be a number of flare-like items strapped together – has been found on the sand near to Driftwood Beach Bar.
Police and HM Coastguard are on scene at Culver Parade, which has been closed between Avenue Road and Fort Street.
An exclusion zone has been established as investigations into the discovery are conducted.
It’s unclear at this early stage as to whether the item – device – has washed ashore, or has been discarded on the beach.
Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts are being consulted on the matter and may be required to attend the scene.
UPDATE @ 17:50 – It has been confirmed that the item is not explosive.
Culver Parade has now reopened with cordons removed.

Suspiciously like a bunch of candles.
Perhaps an attempt at an old Two Ronnies joke (but too many candles)!
How can someone take a picture clearly showing old candles, then Coast guard think ordinance ?, Like you buy a packet of peanuts but not allowed to work it out your self they are nuts – on back it say – May contain nuts ?. I would hope you know what a peanut looks like. Someone said that on a milk carton it say may contain milk too.
Peanuts aren’t actually a true nut; they’re a legume
What sort of people who found this bit of washed up garbage would phone the emergency services.
So many hairy fairy do-gooders about.
Get a life.
Interesting we haven’t been informed what the items actually were?
They’ll be worth a fortune if we get power cuts!!
Seven candles tied into a bunch with twine.
No charge for my advice.
so what was it then?
Candles, quite clearly candles.
Damn.Thats were I dropped my candle’s
Sorry for the mile long traffic queue that I caused that day for people trying to get to sandown etc:)
