A yellow weather warning for strong winds has been issued for the Isle of Wight once again, with forecasters predicting yet another wet and windy weekend – the 3rd in a row this Summer holidays.
Forecasters at IW Met Service say another strong Atlantic system will cross to the North of the Island on Saturday, bringing some very strong Southwesterly then West-Northwesterly winds on its Southern and Western flank. As the wind shifts to the Northwest gusts will potentially affect areas that have been relatively sheltered during the previous few storm systems.
Wind gusts of 45-50mph will be widespread with stronger gusts of 55-60mph on exposed coasts and hills.
Very large waves on Southern and Western coasts will lead to hazardous conditions on the beaches and for small watercraft. High tides and storm surges will lead to the overtopping of walls and sea defences in Southern, Western and Northwestern parts of the Island too.
Today’s news will be deflating for many as the weather has been dismal since the kids broke up from school towards the end of July.
It seems likely that Shanklin Illuminated Carnival will be cancelled on Saturday, as was the main carnival last night (Wednesday), with the weather also set to impact the 2-day Chale Show.
However, the weather picture is improving from Wednesday next week with the sunshine set to return – although it will still be around 10c cooler than it should be for the time of the year.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecast at IW Met Service, says:
“It should be noted that 60mph gusts would be of little consequence during the winter months, but as there are various events taking place along with a larger amount of people on the Island during the summer, the risk of accidents or injuries due to the conditions is significantly higher.
“Any outdoor events should be carefully assessed, especially those in exposed locations and where there are temporary structures such as gazebos and marquees.
“Loose garden furniture should be secured”.
This new weather warning is in force from 10:00 until 23:59 on Saturday 5th August.

I’m pretty sure that the august high should be around 22°
so this article is saying that it will be 10° cooler… meaning temps of just 12°
a typo, methinks!
that or writer believes that 28-30° is ‘normal’ for the IoW?
The hysterical Met Orifice predicted scorching temperatures, so 10 degrees cooler is normal.
Don’t upset the brain-washed Eco nutters. Remember we are all burning, our Cats and Dogs are burning, and we are next….We should all stop using water and save it for the burning winter….
More global cooling will be along soon….
I suggest all holiday makers go home. Can see all you need in two wet days here.
Next year go abroad, that ONE decent Summer was a once in a lifetime event, Not global warming changing the miserable UK s weather forever.
Nothing to see here when wet and most tat and gift shops selling Chinese junk. Pubs poor quality but top dollar and parking and roads abysmal now thousands extra fill the streets. Chavs rule towns and events as Police powerless now.
Try Turkey next year imo
Rob, you ought to work for the tourist board with such an accurate take on the facilities and covering just a few of the issue we have here.
Lucky the Ferries make it hard to re-book without charging now, otherwise many campers would have gone for sure.
I know of one who left the tent, all that was in it (not his wife) and said ‘never again’.
As more houses are built the traffic and parking is dire on such narrow roads.
The Island should just be as much is, a place to come to retire and keep housing numbers down to prevent too many social housing offspring adding more crime and asb to the growing amount we already fund via tax credits.
I don’t know what part of the Island you live Wilbur? but if you lived where i originally came from Mile End (East London) it makes the Island look and feel like a paradise. I walked the other evening at dusk from Shanklin to Ventnor along the coastal path. Beautiful! Try waking through Mile End park the same time of evening!! You would not feel comfortable at all i promise you that! I’ve got to be careful what i say now but there are different race gangs all over this area now. I grant you there is crime here on the Island, but i think you would have a different opinion if you lived for 6 months where i came from? and yes it used to be a great place in the 60’s when i was a kid.
Unfortunately all you DFL add to the foul mouthed nasty DFL that are already here.
are you do use housing ???? Most DFL I know of are.
I came down to the Island in the May of 1977 at the age of 19 Don. I worked in hotels and bars for the next 4 years getting up early in the morning, working 65/70 hours a week, never a day off sick paying my taxes, spending the money that i earned back in the Island’s economy. In 1982 i brought a small hotel in Shanklin, employed many seasonal staff giving them work during their school holidays so they could save a bit of money before going off to college or university. I’m actually proud of what i feel i’ve given back to the Isle of Wight in terms of contributing the economy over the past 40 years. I’ve made money and i’ve spent money mostly on “your” Island. I’m polite, well mannered and will always look out for family and friends.
So what gives you the right to judge me and many others that have moved down to the Island over the past 40 years or so? “Foul mouthed and nasty” You want to learn to read and write mush before you start opening your foul mouth on here Don. You’re an embarrassment! Luckily dare i say we needed some DFL to dilute the idiots like you!
Terrible weather again! We even had to cancel the annual Wicker Man burning here in Wroxall, which means we will have to find yet another virgin. Any volunteers?
There’s no virgins left in some parts of the country, Rotherham comes to mind..
The dangerous heat continues to burn us, can’t take anymore of this climate change
