Organisers of Shanklin Carnival have had to cancel tonight’s (Wednesday’s) main procession due to the wet and windy weather currently being experienced.
Announcing the 11th-hour decision to call off this evening’s carnival, ‘devastated’ organisers have said that they cannot jeopardise the safety of the queens and floats.
A spokesperson has said:
“This is not a decision we have taken lightly as we, and all of the participants have worked tirelessly to get ready for our annual procession.
“The safety of those in the carnival and the public are of paramount importance and it is this and advice that we have taken into account in making our decision.
“Although forecasts show there maybe some improvement in the weather later today, we not only need to be confident that the conditions are acceptable for the event itself but also for those travelling to the carnival, not least the other carnival floats and other participants travelling across the island and forming the procession in advance of the Carnival”.
The carnival was due to get underway at 19:00.
It is yet another blow for the carnival community following the cancellation of Newport Carnival last month. So far this year 2 of the 3 scheduled carnivals (to date) have been pulled, with a break in the bad weather allowing Sandown Carnival to successfully go ahead last Saturday.
Unfortunately, it looks highly likely that Shanklin’s Illuminated carnival on Saturday (5th August) will also be cancelled as the weather forecast is looking less than favourable. However, Islanders should keep an eye on Shanklin Carnival’s Facebook Page for any decision.
The weather is set to improve from next Wednesday, so fingers are crossed that other planned carnivals can go ahead as normal.

I am a total believer as that nice old lady on the stop oil protest video was crying as her grandsons fish were all dyeing as they couldn’t breath… and she was illegally arrested as well so it is a massive conspiracy ain’t it.
Would you prefer the 40+ degrees that much of the Northern Hemisphere is gettting at present?
How are people still not believing climate change is happening? Surely the older you are the more you are noticing massive changes in the weather over the years.
I can remember the hot summer of 1972 as we had a 6 month old baby. We used to go up to Culver down and sit in the shade. It was quite pleasant actually.
Apart from that no memorable changes in my lifetime….

I am all for Carnivals, but on the Island they get carried away
with Road Closures, why I don’t know.
God forbid we should get wet. Board up the doors, close all windows, sit in the dark just in case.
