Councillor Phil Jordan has clung on to his role as Leader of the Isle of Wight Council for another 12 months, thanks to a casting vote by Councillor Ian Dore.
At tonight’s Full Council meeting, Cllr Jordan was re-elected as the leader following a tied vote, which saw him and the Conservative’s Councillor Ed Blake receive 18 votes a piece.
The tie saw the Council’s new chairman, Binstead’s Ian Dore, make the deciding vote – which went in Cllr Jordan’s favour. Cllr Dore was narrowly elected to his role by 19 votes to 17.
Councillor Karl Love, who represents East Cowes, was ousted from the chairman role. However, Vanessa Churchman, representing Haylands and Swamore, continues as Vice Chair.
Councillor Andrew Garratt has been elected as deputy leader, after winning a vote against the Empowering Islanders group’s Councillor Chris Jarman.
Councillor Jordan has said a key motivation for standing again was to ‘finish the job’ he started on devolution and local government re-organisation. He has been the leader since 2023.
He added that it is vital to maintain “consistency and continuity in our relationships and establish the best deal for our Island in our negotiations with government”.
Cllr Jordan said:
“This is a pivotal moment for our Island, and we have less than a year to get the best outcomes, the best funding, the best transfer of powers and the key asks I have already made, such as oversight of the ferries and additional funding for the Island in a fair funding settlement.
“It is not the moment for someone to be ‘learning on the job’ or having ‘doubts’ about the past two years of intense work.
“Our Island comes first, before personal wishes or aspirations and I am confident, and best placed, that I can deliver the best outcome for the Isle of Wight.”

Well done Cllr Jordan, better the devil
you know.
Sad to see Cllr Love ousted from the role of chairman.
Cllr Love has done so much for East Cowes, where
else do you get free parking and free to use toilets
on the island.
Pivotal moment indeed. Gives you a year to shred all the dodgy documents and hide the deals you have done behind closed doors before Reform UK win next year and reveal the depth of this councils corruption and lies.
Don’t know why they are bothering. The new “Mayor” of Hampshire and the “Solent” (the new name for the Isle of Wight) will be in charge not far in the future and local government will do his bidding. They might as well pack in now and save some money and let the wolves run free.
Thank god that egotistical fool jarman didnt get in,after all,he is a tory disguised as an “empowering” islander,he would ave caused chaos like he did before, this idiot should realise he is not liked, even by some members of totland parish council, FACT!
Worse than that, the nearest runner was Ed Blake!
Sounds very fishy to me, fortunately he was in
the wrong ‘plaice’ at the wrong time!
He was kippered this time round.
What a catch he will be.
Enough of the fish jokes I am off to play a
round of golf. I feel a bit under par
Lol
Councillor Phil Jordan, like most of his colleagues, was only given a mandate to govern till the last election. The whole idea of democracy is that you can remove people if they don’t do the job the public requires of them, That right was stolen from us and now we are set on a course championed by Mr Jordan to likely be government from the mainland.
I know he believes otherwise, lets hope he is right, but now approved by his fellow councillors, not the voters of the Island, he is reappointed to take us in a direction that many on this Island neither like nor agree with and, counter to our democratic rights, have no means to express a democratic opposition to.
This is interesting…
‘On 7 March 2017 Edward Blake (General Manager of Ventnor Haven Fishery) pleaded guilty to breaches of the Public Order Act at Newport Combined Court on the Isle of Wight.
The court heard how on 1 September 2015 two MMO marine officers visited Ventnor Haven Fishery in order to assist the business owners with difficulties they had encountered in entering landing data. During the course of this work it was identified that some offences may have been committed and at this point Mr Blake became increasingly agitated with the MMO marine officers. Mr Blake proceeded to swear at the officers, unleashing a tirade of verbal abuse and threats. He then barged past one of the officers making shoulder contact as he left the premises.’
Rather glad he didn’t get in if these are his negotiation tactics when questioned.
We don’t need thugs in control, he probably only
wants power to help his families businesses expand etc.
Let’s face it the majority of businesses in Ventnor
are Blakes owned!
