Aldi has officially submitted plans for a new £10million store in Ryde and is now urging residents to make their support known to the Isle of Wight Council as part of the formal planning consultation.
The award-winning discount supermarket chain has applied to build a new store on the site of the former Neutrik building at Westridge Business Park, Cothey Way, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The proposal includes the creation of up to 40 new jobs, 114 free parking spaces, EV charging points and landscaped improvements to enhance the site’s appearance and biodiversity.
The planning application follows a public consultation held in April, where Aldi says nearly 853 residents took part – with around 93% in favour of the plans.
Matthias Daly, Aldi Real Estate Director, has said:
“We are very pleased to have submitted our planning application for a new Aldi store on land at Cothey Way, Ryde, on the land of the former Neutrik building at Westridge Business Park.
“During our consultation in April, we received an overwhelmingly positive response from local residents: almost 853 people participated and around 93% of respondents said they supported the proposal.
“We are delighted that so many people recognise the major benefits that a new Aldi store would bring to Ryde. Isle of Wight Council is now running its own consultation and we urge people to make their support known.
“We are committed to continued engagement with the local community and the Council and are hopeful of a decision on planning permission later this year.”
If approved, the development would bring Aldi’s high-quality, low-cost grocery offering to Ryde for the first time, with the aim of improving local access to affordable fresh food.
Residents who wish to support the application are encouraged to submit their comments directly to Isle of Wight Council during the current consultation period.

For years nomone has controlled the traffic going in and
out of McDonald’s – it is an accident waiting too happen!
I cannot believe the island authorities allow such traffic
congestion and danger.
I know they don’t know what they are doing and are uneducated
when it comes to traffic control, but Enough is Enough.
Force McDonald’s to sort the traffic problem, too be honest
with the number of numpties who eat this sh*t they need a
larger premises.
Until that congestion is sorted, how will Aldi traffic flow!!
Why the hell do we need yet another superstore on the Island? There is only a limited number of customers on the Island and the more superstores there are means that they will have to restrict their range to the most profitable giving customers far less choice.
I absolutely agree, plus the traffic layout is
Sh*t!
A store directly next to Tesco, potential for taking Tesco customers, this is likely to mean in a time of financial pressures Aldi will gain custom at the expense of Tesco.
This is basic economics, I have little doubt Tesco will suffer. Aldi are making huge gains against the Big Four across the Country.
The traffic issue will be the problem, otherwise
it’s good competition.
How is the traffic going to be a problem. The people using that road will just divert to aldi on there way to Tesco. There won’t be any more traffic
Have you never been caught up in the
shocking traffic queue going into McDonald’s,
obviously not!
Actually the opposite happens, when Aldi open near a Tesco, Asda, Morrisons etc. their foot-fall goes up…..
I think you’ll find aldi will not be short of customers and they know exactly what they are doing. I support them 100% Don’t pretend you won’t be shopping there
Good news, other negative comments are pretty much non sensical imo
As a supermarket, do they supply local products.
Unfortunately it will be the public, targeting the cheapest food they can possible get that will bring standards down and put small businesses and small produces at risk.
Good food comes at a price, not much more than the cheap stuff churned out by huge corporations with fields treated with all sorts of chemicals poisoning the land everywhere.
There may well be a link to all the health problems that are increasing year on year which were not around before all the intensive farming and ultra processing was in place. We are our own worst enemy as a species, we are getting weaker and it’s all of our own making.
Yep go and buy the cheap crap and don’t put any good food in your body, there is a long term outcome, not death, unfortunately, but ill health, obesity, dementia, mobility issues.
I had better stop and put that soap box away again.
Fantastic news. Can’t wait to save money on my shopping bill
Much better value than Tesco
