An ambulance has been involved in a road traffic collision with a car in the centre of Newport this afternoon (Thursday).
It is understood that the ambulance was responding to St Mary’s Hospital at the time of the collision, which occurred on Mill Street at the junction with Lugley Street at just before 15:15.
A white Suzuki Alto has sustained front end damage in the smash, with some minor damage also sustained to the contracted-in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ambulance.
Island Echo understands the emergency ambulance had just been in attendance at an incident in the village of Brighstone, where a 19-year-old girl fell out of a tree.

Police have attended the scene and after breathalysing the driver as standard practice, officers have allowed the ambulance to continue on its journey to hospital.
The Suzuki, with 2 occupants, has been pushed to the side of the road whilst awaiting recovery.

You really couldn’t make this up. Young lady not having a good day!
I hope the Ambulance paused at that junction, otherwise there’s no way the car driver could have seen it, irrespective of blue lights and sirens.
What was a 19 year old doing up a tree? Rescueing the cat
Or pretending to be a cat?
Yes it pauses the Suzuki pulled out without looking! I witnessed it sirens were on and car ignored all rules on the road, police are procecuting the Suzuki driver!
From the picture it looks like suzuki had right of way as ambulance going through give way
Its not easy to see along Lugley St from that junction due to the cars that park along there…and cars do treat Lugley St like there’s no junction there by driving quite fast along it. I’ve never seen an ambulance driving without due care and attention but seen plenty of cars doing it!
I’ll jump the gun… another elderly person that shouldn’t be driving ? You really can’t miss Blues and Twos when it’s that close… Well, actually it seems you can…
Couldnt agree more, I hope they were also drug tested. Too many old codgers driving around spaced out or just not in control of their vehicles. Selfish people.
That’s funny. News from the magistrates court show it’s young morons driving while whacked out on pot.
Actually, if the car was driving along Lugley Street, then it had the right-of-way, regardless of the blue lights. I can’t see how the police can prosecute the driver. Although we all do, there is no legal requirement to give way to an emergency vehicle as far as I’m aware. This may have changed, though.
Suzuki driver hit accelerator instead of brake it flashed the ambalance across and yet they went fully in the side of the ambalance. The ambalance was stationary when the impact occurred.
Your the exact kind of person who would plough into a emergency vehicle because u have right of way … coffin dodgers unite
What an insult of interpretation of a correct statement by Eve. I noted that it was reported that it was a contracted in ambulance ( and crew ?) just following sat nav ?
And you are the sort of arsehole who is obviously too illiterate to understand what you are reading.
They are very old trucks, normally have to be under 5 years old for NHS blue light use
No not at all some NHS ambulances here are 9 years old with nearly 300k miles on the clock
Strange route for the ambulance to take back to the hospital if on blue lights from Brighstone????
Re dopey Eve Shipman’s comment.. You are obliged by law to give way to an emergency vehicle
as long as by doing so you are not breaking the law. This is why women should not be allowed to drive, those that do have trouble understanding the highway code.
According to Rule 219 of the Highway Code, drivers should take the following steps when an emergency vehicle approaches: … Drivers should not break the law to make way for emergency vehicles and should take care not to endanger other motorists, moving aside only when it is safe and there is space to do so.
Maybe men should learn to read the highway code.
Any need for the casual sexism Ron?
Aww, did his frightening words scare you?
Motorists are always encouraged to give way to emergency vehicles when safe to do so.
Notwithstanding this, the Suzuki driver clearly had the right of way here, and may not have known of the ambulance’s presence (we do not know if it’s lights and sirens were activated) until the last second. Furthermore, there may have been a vehicle immediately behind the Suzuki, and an emergency stop may itself have caused an accident.
However, there is never any justification for any emergency vehicle to risk causing an accident and/or loss of life by ignoring the rules of the road, in this case the failure to observe the ‘give way’ road marking. It is clearly the ambulance driver who is at fault here.
Regardless of right of way and rules of the road nonsense, how about using common sense? It seems that that simple life trait is missing in a lot of drivers who take to the road here on the island. It’s not that hard people.
Nonsense is it? Okay then, tear up the Highway Code, have a free for all on the roads, and see how far you get. How about demonstrating some common sense yourself.
Just a thought…This is not on the main route from Brighstone to St.Mary’s ?
So if Blues & Twos, why was it there?
Looks like a case of Suzuki driver needs eye sight and hearing chq
I actually don’t believe many island drivers have actually read the Highway Code Book… it is only about 84 pages.. but many motorists do not have a clue on indicators, amber lights ( what do they mean eh ? ) At many junctions there are two sets of broken white lines going across ‘your ‘ side of road,, how many of you know what the inner one and outer one means.. ? How many drivers know what the centre line of roads means.. or how about , what does a solid white line along edge or road mean ?? Plus many more things ie: putting blue lights on front of vehicles..?? Not insured if driving with them lit on public roads, how about those that make their exhaust louder, do they inform their insurance company they have modified the exhaust.. well may not be insured then..
Too many non caring drivers on our roads and too many think roads are race tracks.. no CARE for other people.. what does it say in Highway Code… Drive with care and attention… !!
I’ve driven on the IOW. I’ve driven all over the Country and abroad. I can say that IOW residence are the Worst Drivers in the World. How they have passed a test I will never know. I just hope they never bring that very low standard of driving to our Main Island.
Have driven in Auckland N.Z.and will state that the islanders here are not as bad by a mile. Many areas on the mainland are worse. Rather drive here than on the mainland.
