96mph winds have been recorded at The Needles today (Wednesday) causing widespread problems on the roads, trains and cross-Solent travel.
Needles Coastwatch Institution has confirmed that the most Westerly point of the Isle of Wight has experienced winds of almost 100mph, reaching 96.9mph – 86 knots.
There is disruption on Island Line trains this afternoon due to an electricity supply problem. As a result, no trains are currently running between Ryde Esplanade and Shanklin. At this time, South Western Railway have said they expect the disruption will continue to affect their services until the end of the day. However, tickets can be used on Southern Vectis route 2 and 3 buses.
Cross-Solent services have also been affected today, with Hovertravel suspending its Ryde to Southsea crossings until further notice. There have been cancellations on Red Funnel’s Red Jet service but services have now resumed.
Earlier today, fallen trees caused disruption on the roads but Island Roads have now cleared the debris.
In Sandown, the strength of the gusts has snapped two flagpoles in half and ripped the roof off a beach hut.
