The ‘StubbingNOT’ was a 10km social run around Sandown Bay, which was held on Sunday (7th January). The social run was organised to coincide with the Stubbington 10km – a traditional season-opening running race held just over the Solent. Popular with runners from the Island, it sells out in hours every year. For those who missed out this year, Wight Tri’s events coordinator, Neil Cooper, came up with the idea of the ‘StubbingNOT’. There were no marshals, no timing, no results, no signs; the route was a simple out-and-back. Starting at Yaverland car park, it went to the far end of Shanklin seafront, just short of the Fisherman’s Cottage, and back again. Although this was a Wight Tri initiative, all were welcome and around 70 runners from a range of other island running clubs were represented, plus plenty of runners who aren’t currently affiliated to a running club. With such a huge turnout of runners, its popularity could see this becoming an annual event. The weather was near-perfect for the time of year, cold but with bright sunshine and blue sky – but runners had to contend with a bit of a headwind on the way back. However, they were welcomed at the finish by the Wight Tri ‘ Pop up cafe’, providing hot drinks and cakes.
Wight Tri Winter Duathlon Series…
Next up for Wight Tri is the East Cowes Duathlon, the 4th in the Wight Tri Winter Duathlon Series. This will be held this Sunday, 14th January. Participants will meet at 08:15 for a 09:00 start, on Columbine Road/Albany Road, East Cowes. Run-bike-run, choice of distances and – best of all – it’s a nominated time event: so the slowest person could be the winner. The East Cowes Duathlon will be for Wight Tri members only – but it is possible to join for just £5 up to April – so all are welcome to participate.
