A 42-year-old woman is being treated in a mainland hospital for burns following a house fire in Ryde yesterday morning (Thursday), with a 12-year-old girl and a 9-year-old girl also taken to hospital.
As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services rushed to Swanmore Road when smoke was seen billowing into the morning sky. Around 25 firefighters from Ryde, Newport and Sandown were involved in tackling the blaze, which appears to have begun at the rear of the property before spreading to the roof space.
Passers-by raised the alarm and helped to rescue a mum and 2 children from the burning building ahead of the arrival of fire crews.
It has now been confirmed that a 42-year-old woman has suffered burns and smoke inhalation as a result of the fire. She remains in hospital for treatment and has been transferred to the Odstock burns unit in Salisbury.
The 2 children, aged just 12 and 9, were taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport but have since been discharged and are now in the care of family members.
Fire investigators from the mainland were called in to examine the scene in Swanmore yesterday with Police maintaining a scene guard. Hampshire Constabulary have now confirmed that the fire is not being treated as suspicious with all cordons lifted.
The cause of the serious fire has not yet been released.
