The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has been mobilised to assist HM Coastguard with 4 persons stuck in the mud at Yaverland this evening (Thursday).
Solent Coastguard requested the assistance of the fire service at around 17:30 following reports of persons stuck in the mud at the base of the cliff at Yaverland Beach near Sandown.
A multi-agency operation is now underway with 1 fire appliance from Sandown, the Water Rescue Unit from Newport and the Rescue Tender, also from Newport, on scene alongside a duty Tactical Advisor.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team has 2 vehicles in attendance with specialist mud rescue equipment.
UPDATE @ 18:00 – The 4 casualties are now safe and are being given casualty care. The fire service’s Water Rescue Unit and Rescue Tender are standing down from the incident.
Firefighters and Coastguard Rescue Officers are working to stretcher 2 of the casualties along the beach and back onto dry land.
An ambulance from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has been requested at the scene to check over those involved, but no one is thought to have been seriously injured.
UPDATE @ 18:15 – The primary casualty, a woman, is now in the care of paramedics. A child has also been helped back to the car park and is being checked over too.
A second casualty is now being stretchered along the beach. A man, who has evidently been in the mud, has not required medical assistance and has gone to collect a vehicle parked nearby.
UPDATE @ 19:28 – With all casualties back to safety, the incident is being wound down.
Some further details are expected later on this evening.

It’s winter, why do people take chances like this???
It costs money and it must be paid for by someone, and others risk their lives to rescue them, so why do they do this…
Because there clowns
If their not islanders and just over here for half term let’s hope they are fined.
If they are islanders they should also be fined…
Doesn’t matter who they are they should be fined, it is ridiculous to go out there in winter and after all the rain we have had
What’s rain got to do with getting stuck in the mud that the sea has been on but fair enough unless out on daily exercise then there is no excuse.
Unnecessary journey should have left them.
People will end up in real trouble if they keep larking around in dangerous places.
Must have been pretty stupid
Yet another waste of valuable emergency service resources – what is wrong with people?!
Hopefully it is only mud, and not the other sort of brown stuff you can get stuck in when exploring our coastline.
These people are probably visitors who have travelled here for half term. Yes, the island is full of second home owners. Tesco is incredibly busy with visitors. Non essential travel should not be happening. So why are they not being turned back at the ferry ports by the Police? Resource I suppose, cannot have a copper sitting at a port all day, shame, because so many are ignoring the rules and coming here AGAIN. Surely cannot be islanders, we know not to walk beneath cliffs due to the erosion and falls. If they are visitors, they should receive a fine for sure.
Yes, Tesco is busy, Asda and others less so. If you are going to Tesco and should not have travelled ensure you know where the exit is. The term
stuck out like a sore thumbcomes to mind.Blah blah blah! Second home owners, DFLs, Blah blah blah… Not islanders, mainland visitors, Blah blah blah! Give it a rest seriously!!!
What were they doing in the mud anyway, surely under the current lockdown rules, beach walking can’t be classified as exercise. Obviously they were breaking the rules if one of the casualties went to collect his car.
Altogether now – “Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud”
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
