2 young people reported to be in trouble along a remote section of coastline on the Isle of Wight have been found following a search and rescue operation during the early hours of this morning (Monday).
At just before midnight, Solent Coastguard received a 999 call from a young Newport woman reporting that her and an unrelated man needed help after starting to walk from Thorness to Gurnard.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from The Needles and Ventnor were tasked to the scene, soon supported by Cowes RNLI lifeboat.
Search teams were quickly deployed and the woman was soon found before being supported back to safety to meet paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service at Gurnard Luck.
With the second casualty still missing, the search continued. Shouting for help was then heard coming from the cliffs to the east of Thorness Bay…
It wasn’t long until the second casualty – a Polish man from Cowes – was located, with first aid provided at the scene by Coastguard Rescue Officers. He had received injuries whilst attempting to climb a bush and rock covered cliff.
As the quickest and safest way of rescuing the casualty, he was packaged and stretchered onto Cowes Lifeboat and transferred to Trinity Landing in Cowes.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service met the casualty at Cowes for onward conveyance to St Mary’s Hospital.
Coastguard teams stood down by 03:45 – almost 4 hours after the incident began.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
