A 19-year-old motorcyclist is in hospital with serious injuries following a road traffic incident in Newport last night (Tuesday), which has prompted an appeal for information this morning.
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to Medina Way at around 20:45 after a Honda motorcycle collided with the safety barrier at St Mary’s Junction.
Police closed 1 lane of the southbound carriageway whilst paramedics tended to the male rider, who was located in the middle of the central reservation. Members of the public also stopped to assist.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service later conveyed the casualty the short distance to St Mary’s Hospital. Subsequently, his motorcycle were moved to the side of the road and the dual carriageway was fully re-opened.
Police have this morning confirmed that the 19-year-old, from Newport, remains in hospital. His family have been made aware.
The southbound lanes of Medina Way have now been closed to all traffic to allow Police to conduct further investigations and for evidence preservation. Yellow ‘CRASH’ boards have been erected appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is now asking for anyone with information about the collision, who has not already spoken to officers, to come forward. Investigating officers would particularly like to speak to anyone with relevant dashcam footage.
If you have any information about this incident you should call Police on 101, quoting reference 44230330095.
Traffic remains heavy in the area this morning due to the unexpected closure.
UPDATE @ 11:59 – The road has now re-opened to all traffic following the conclusion of on-scene investigations.

Hope the guy makes a full recovery.
Hang on in there nipper. Wishing you a full recovery
To fast, why can’t people go slower on that section.
It wasn’t anything to do with speed. Please be respectful of the family and don’t speculate without the facts.
Possibly not- but serious injuries at 30mph part of road and sliding against barrier!. We all have seen vehicles race across junction at 50/60mph thinking it’s already 70.
I’ve seen people in hospital for 2 years after a push bike crash at 30mph so why is this not possible?
If wearing proper safety gear and helmet you would not get serious injuires at 30mph or below, that’s why the limit is set at 30mph.
I used to work with a guy who suffered a lower spine injury and was confined to a wheelchair.
He fell of his bike doing 5mph , slipped on spilt gravel local council had known about for weeks.
It’s not the speed, it’s the situation.
Bit of an oxymoron there, Lou. You say it was nothing to do with speed and then rightly caution people not to speculate without the facts. Unless you know for a fact that speed had nothing to do with the accident/incident, surely you are, err, speculating? If you know the exact speed the rider was doing, his level of competence, road and traffic conditions and the situation pertaining, my apologies and condolences, as you must be the rider.
Maybe, like myself, Overner, Lou is privvy to info that is not known to the general public. We could be family, we could be friends, we could have spoken to the police officers who attended, there are many possibilities! And no neither of us are a 19 year old male and therefore are not the rider. As with all incidents/accidents the first & foremost thoughts must be with all those involved, be it, the actual person, the family & friends & any emergency personnel.
Wishing the young man full recovery.
Seen a motorcycle speed wheeling on monday night on the same carriage way its not sensible to do this at any speed. Easily can loose control whatever skills you have….
the faster you go the worse the injury simple ffs slow down ppl
Sending love and hope to him and his loved ones. Get well soon xxxx
