Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have confirmed that a whopping 161 motorists were caught speeding by Police across the Isle of Wight in November.
The enforcement is part of the wider Joint Operations Unit (JOU) which serves all of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, as well as the Thames Valley.
The JOU are often seen on the Island roads alongside our local Police force as the crackdown on motoring offenses, especially speed continues.
Officers visited 19 different locations across the Island on no fewer than 35 different occasions.
In a statement released on their Facebook page, Isle of Wight Police have said:
“The combined efforts of all of these teams are much more effective when we receive information and intelligence from the public about specific issues and problem areas. So, please keep reporting things to us.
“When you report speeding or other driving offences, you may not always see an immediate police response. However, please be reassured this information is all used to help us target hotspot areas.”

North rd in shanklin we have had 3 Ford St’s racing down our road down seafront back up and up queens rd and down north rd again and again about 11-30 to 12-30 am popping and banging so inconsiderate to the people who live on these roads
Shanklin Brat Pack, spoilt little rich kids who think the law don’t apply to them.
The Council need to invest in making Island Roads safe for everyone.
ANPR Islandwide I know many people who drive in London and most Boroughs
now have a 20mph speed limit.
I have friends who have gone a few miles over and they are fined, letter arrives in the Post.
It’s too easy on the Island to speed and get away with it.
Box of felt nails is cheap, use a magnet to clear them up afterwards to keep the innocent from paying out of course.
U need to be locked up
Not noticed a change in the idiots that insist being up my back side every day and overtaking at speed and on blind bends. Not good enough just catching those doing 35 in a 30 yet those doing 60 in a 30 never get caught. If anyone wants to spend a while watching those speed check signs that tell speed in red then green,eg Shanklin old village, you’ll soon see the many more. If speeding money stayed on the Island would pay for this police team.
I drove all night to get to you is that alright
Speeding is not good, but wish the police would spend more time catching real villains, and getting drug dealers of our streets
Real villains!!!!!! Yes, there is much work to do for our Police forces throughout the UK now, not just on the island. But speeders, drink & drug drivers can take other road users lives, innocent lives. So yes, these morons who drive drunk or drugged up it think it’s fun to drive fast (anyone can drive fast but not everyone who hasn’t been trained can drive SAFELY) they are as you put it, villains and need to be caught.
Someone who kills or seriously injures another person because of their bad driving is a “real villain”. There are several reports a week, usually daily which involve people being carted off to A&E after a crash.
The role of the police is to protect the public and while most serious injuries are being caused by idiots on the road then the police are quite right in concentrating on that problem.
Maybe if fewer people drove like morons the police would be able to spend more catching what you term “real villains”. Just a thought.
Hello mr bond stop ruining are fun
Don’t drug dealers and burglars use cars?
So during these stops they find criminals as well also the presence of the roadside ops deter criminals, so win win
wish they would catch the drivers that use the lake end of green lane shanklin as a race track .all times of day and night.
Traffic calming like those in Perowne Way would help.
Surprised it wasn’t more. Tailgaters should be pulled up as well. I’m sick of cars stuck to my backside whilst driving at the speed limit. For safety’s sake leave a gap. Do speedsters get to their destination a lot quicker ?
On island roads you will soon catch up with other traffic.
dont be such a slow coach then – move out of the way
Not when they’re stuck behind you poodling along! Put your foot down you know it all!
KIA said “I’m sick of cars stuck to my backside whilst driving at the speed limit“
Notice the bit in bold?
Not too bright, are you?
Make everywhere a national limit then.
speed doesn’t kill, sudden deceleration kills. Can tell you have a sub 60 IQ
Actually it’s 149.
There are probably amoeba with a higher IQ than you, however.
Make everywhere a national speed limit. PMSL.
Yeah, the sudden deceleration that occurs as you slam into the back of the car you have been tailgating.
Bingo is giving you too much credit. There are bacteria with a higher IQ than you.
It is a fact that 99.9% of tailgaters are unfortunately overners. A mate of mine admitted his years living in the smoke created bad impatient driving. I bet if questioned when caught for driving offences, how long have you lived on the Island, not many would say, since birth!!!
Couldn’t do that on the Mainland nowdays so many areas are Twentys plenty and many have
ANPR etc
Sadly the Island is a Dinosaur with its 1950s – 70s infrastructure.
So much needs doing to bring the Island up to date, until then I would say from what I read on a daily basis with all the accidents that take place.
Island Roads are UNSAFE whether it’s Overners or Island born motorists.
IW Council need to make the Roads safer for everyone.
Can you tell us where you got the factual statistic that 99.9 percent of tailgaters are overners, Minder? No? But you have the ‘evidence’ of a mate who admitted living in London created bad and impatient driving? Ah, that proves it then. Any other unimpeachable statistical base of information ? No? Well I never. Do facts in fact not concern you when you are quoting them as …a fact? No surprise if not many drivers would say they have lived on the Island since birth, which may just be because there are so many people here who were not born on the Island. Or is that too hard for you too figure out? Blimey
Try the Ryde Esplanade race track on weekend evenings especially.
It’s about time people who drive took responsibility for their driving & their vehicles
So many people do not understand the Highway Code
So many people are driving vehicles with expired MOTs
It is a motorists responsibility to check
Just go to
Government website
car vehicle history MOT, there are no excuses
I wonder how many of the 161 speeding vehicles had Tax & MOT
Do the Police actually check that, or are they only concerned about speeding
It may be that motorists think because they have Road Tax, they have MOT, that is not the case
An MOT may expire 2nd Dec 22, but if taxed on 1st Dec 22
They could be driving an whole year with NO Mot
I see bad examples of driving daily on the island. It’s not just the speeders it’s the older generation who should respect other road users and perhaps consider alternative options.
I’ll know when it’s time to hand in my keys…..do you?
With your mindset i think you should hand yourself in
John a pot head we all know
Are they only checking 9-5? The streets a full of speeders every night in their boy racer cars. I’m sure most of us see them regularly, when will the police?
Perhaps they should look at poor standard of driving and elderly people who are a danger on the roads as they have no awareness of other road users are incapable of passing stationery buses slow down to 5 mph when turning off main road and cannot reverse …. I know this will happen to a good many as we get older but poor reaction times and eyesight are a bigger danger than travelling at 34mph … let’s get a balance in what safety is about ….. just get unsafe drivers re tested
